The play comes to its spine-tingling conclusion when the ladies hide the bird from the male authorities, denying them the evidence of motive they need to convict Mrs. Wright.
The act of knotting a quilt is linked to the act of killing a man with a rope around his neck. The play ends with George Henderson asking the women how Minnie was going to finish the quilt. Mrs. Hale's certainty that she was going to “knot it” symbolizes the women's certainty that Minnie killed her husband.
Wright was going to finish the quilt by knotting it, which is a whole lot like the way she finished off her husband… by knotting a rope around his neck. The pronoun "we" also packs a punch in the last line. Mrs. Hale says, "We call it—knot it, Mr.
Hale asks Mrs. Peters if these clothes were all Mrs. Wright asked to be brought to her in jail. Mrs.
The quilt represents her mental instability. Since she was always home alone she spent most her time making quilts. In the play Mrs. Hale points out that the one she was just working on was so nice and even then the pattern went all over the place.
Though it is made very clear in the opening scene of this play that Mrs. Wright is in fact guilty of the murder of her husband, the theme of this play is not solely based on the idea of feminism and social hierarchies. It is upon the continuation of reading this play that the true and deeper symbolism is revealed.
Hand tying a quilt consists of stitching a tough, heavy yarn or thread through the quilt's three layers and tying a knot to to secure the layers together permanently. Knots are placed at regular intervals all over the quilt. The knots hold the layers in place so they don't shift as the quilt is used or washed.
When Hale asked what he died of, she replied, “He died of a rope around his neck." ....... Hale fetched Harry, and the two men went upstairs and found Wright's body lying on the bed.
She either had to quilt it, meaning she had to endure the abuse, or she would knot it and decide that her life as it exists was “not it” and she would do something to change it. The referral to the quilt as a trifle is very symbolic in the story. Mr. Hale says “Women are used to worrying over trifles”(Glaspell 159).
How long has it been since Mrs Hale visited Mrs Wright? one year. She said she was busy as a farmer's wife and because the house wasn't cheerful.
Hale and Mrs. Peters found a bird a cage with one of the door henges ripped off and this bird strangled in a box under some quilt patches. This is perhaps the most obvious evidence of John Wright's domestic abuse towards his wife.
Wright's role as a mother; Mr. Wright killed his wife's desire to have children. -The bird represents peace; Mr. Wright destroyed the peace of the household by constantly fighting with his wife.
Written in the early 1900s, “Trifles” deals with the rights of, expectations for and assumptions about women in society at the time. In an ironic twist, the audience knows that the women have solved the murder mystery while the men remain oblivious of the truth because of their assumptions.
The suspense in the story is the most important element that is never ignored. Glaspell portrays this at the end of the play without telling what happens.
What is ironic about this excerpt? The men believe the women are incapable of discovering anything of substance when, in fact, they are the ones who discover evidence.
The climax is the story's turning point. During the climax, the main character often faces a final challenge or conflict.
The last line is significant because while Mrs. Hale answers the question, she also hides an important piece of evidence in her pocket—the dead bird. What is more important than what she says is what she leaves unsaid. Mrs. Hale shows a form of female power in keeping silent, as does Mrs. Peters.
The significance of the last line of Trifles lies in what is left unsaid. Mrs. Hale answers the mocking question put to her , but she doesn't reveal the critically important evidence of the dead bird hidden in her pocket. Her voice would probably be calm, but with an underlying note of contempt. She would be feeling anger and disgust at the way men treat women.
Throughout the play, the men laugh at the women for their interest in what they consider "trifles" of no importance. For example, as the play is beginning, the sheriff, Henry Peters, laughs at the women as they exclaim over Minnie's pretty log cabin pattern quilt and wonder how she is going to assemble it. Peters says:
