Dai Gyakuten Saiban, which roughly translates to The Great Ace Attorney, will take place between 1868-1912 during the Meiji era, according to Siliconera (via Eurogamer). The game will star Phoenix Wright's ancestor Ryunosuke Naruhodo.
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, recently localized after five years as a Japanese-exclusive title, is a spinoff that takes place in England and Japan during the Victorian and Meiji era. (Though packaged as one game, it includes two games, The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures and The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve.)
Within the narrative, the chronological ordering of the episodes, which occur from April to December of 2027, is: The Monstrous Turnabout, Turnabout Reclaimed, Turnabout Academy, the first half of The Cosmic Turnabout, Turnabout Countdown, the second half of The Cosmic Turnabout, and then Turnabout for Tomorrow.
It's a familiar sight to any London tourist, but in The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, the Victorian-set prequel to Capcom's much beloved Phoenix Wright games, those scales take centre stage right inside the courtroom.

As such, years are written relative to the present-day events of the games, which in total take place over the course of almost precisely a year. Of note is that some characters' ages change between the two games but others' don't. This is treated as the characters having their birthdays in the intervening time; that is, their ages in the second game are used to determine their birth years.
For example, the real-life Natsume Sōseki was only present in the UK from 1901 to January 1903 at 34-35 years of age, while the in-game version is 33 years old.
Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey take Pearl Fey on a trip to Berry Big Circus, where they witness Max Galactica's "flying" magic trick.
Olive Green attempts to murder William Shamspeare, and is accidentally stabbed in back by Joan Garrideb and goes into a coma.
Odie Asman introduces Albert Harebrayne to Enoch Drebber, who agrees to work on an "instantaneous kinesis" machine according to Harebrayne's specifications.
However, they are generally considered to be in separate, usually self-contained, timelines.
This is evident in the fact that characters' ages do not change within a game (except during "flashback" cases), even when a new year passes by.
The game was released by Capcom for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan on July 9, 2015. It was made available in various different editions. A limited edition, which is only sold through Capcom's "e-Capcom" store, includes the game, a box based on Holmes' briefcase, Holmes and Iris plush toys, a pin based on the one Ryuunosuke wears, postcards, and a Holmes-themed sticker. Another edition, also exclusive to e-Capcom, includes the game, a soundtrack CD, and a collection of illustrations. Additionally, there is one edition that includes the game and all the bonus items from the other editions. Pre-orders of the game also included a The Great Ace Attorney theme for the Nintendo 3DS home screen. A limited edition bundling The Great Ace Attorney with its sequel and a soundtrack CD with music from both games was released on August 3, 2017. The original soundtrack release was published by Capcom in Japan on July 15, 2015. Android and iOS versions of the game were released in Japan on August 30 and August 31, 2017, respectively.

Taking place near the end of the 19th century and the dawn of the 20th century (known in Japan as the Meiji Period, in Britain as the Victorian era ), The Great Ace Attorney focuses on Ryunosuke Naruhodo, an English student at Teito Yūmei University and an ancestor of primary Ace Attorney series protagonist Phoenix Wright. He is described as a character with a strong sense of justice, but who easily ends up in danger. Joining Ryunosuke is Kazuma Asogi, his friend and law student. He is studying to become a defense attorney, but is described by Capcom as being "more than qualified to be one" already. As the modern judicial system was new at the time in Japan, Asogi aims to complete his studies in Great Britain. Ryunosuke and Asogi are aided by Susato Mikotoba, a judicial assistant. She is described by Capcom as a yamato nadeshiko (a personification of the image of the ideal Japanese woman), a progressive dreamer, and a lover of foreign mystery novels.
Takumi wanted the music to sound more "festive" than the electronic music used in earlier Ace Attorney games, so he asked Kitagawa to make use of a live orchestra, but with fewer instruments than in the previous game. He also wanted it to sound British, so Kitagawa ended up using sounds similar to chamber music. They did not think piano sounded right for the game, which led to difficulties in differentiating the instruments, as they only had string and wind instruments; because of this, they ended up introducing Spanish elements to the music. As a reference to how Holmes is known for playing the violin, they also tried using violins in the music.
The game carries on the courtroom style gameplay of previous installments in the Ace Attorney series, including the fully 3D environments and character models previously featured in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies. Like previous titles, the game is divided between investigation, in which players explore areas to gather evidence and testimonies, and courtroom battles, in which players must find contradictions in witness testimonies to find the truth behind a case. Similarly to Takumi's previous game, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, the player sometimes has to cross-examine multiple witnesses at the same time.
Development began in 2013, a few months after the Japanese release of Takumi's previous project, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, when he was asked to work on a new Ace Attorney game. At one point, he considered having the game focus on civil trials, but remembered a game idea he had come up with earlier: around 2000, he had the idea of a mystery game in which a detective makes incorrect deductions, and where players have to correct the detective and lead him towards the truth. He thought it would be fun to combine the idea with Ace Attorney, but did not expect Capcom to accept the idea.
Single-player. The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures is an adventure game in the Ace Attorney series, developed and published by Capcom. It was directed by Shu Takumi and produced by Shintaro Kojima. The game was released for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan in July 2015, with Android and iOS versions following in August 2017.
The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve is the second entry in The Great Ace Attorney series. It was released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2017 in Japan; it has also been released for Android and iOS in 2018 in Japan.
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is a compilation of both Adventures and Resolve to be released in July 2021 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Microsoft Windows. This will be the first time both games are officially available outside of Japan.

The Ace Attorney Investigations spin-off series splits the gameplay into investigation phases and rebuttal phases , the latter of which is similar to the courtroom trials of the main series. During the investigation phases, the player searches for evidence and talks to witnesses and suspects. Things the player character notices in the environment are saved as thoughts; the player can use the "logic" system to connect two such thoughts to gain access to new information. At some points, the player can create hologram reproductions of the crime scene, through which they can discover new information that would otherwise be hidden. Ace Attorney Investigations 2 introduces "logic chess", where the player interrogates witnesses in a timed sequence that is visualized as a game of chess, with the player aiming to destroy the other character's chess pieces. To do this, they need to build up their advantage in the discussion by alternating between speaking and listening, and then choose to go on the offensive.
Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is a crossover between Ace Attorney and the Professor Layton series. It was released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2012 in Japan and in 2014 in the West.
The series currently consists of six main series games and five spin-offs.
Ace Attorney is a series of adventure video game legal dramas developed by Capcom. The first entry in the series, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, was released in 2001; since then, five further main series games, as well as various spin-offs and high-definition remasters for newer game consoles, have been released. Additionally, the series has seen adaptations in the form of a live-action film and an anime, and has been the base for manga series, drama CDs, musicals and stage plays .
Fans looking to start with The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles will ultimately have to decide for themselves if it is the right time to jump into Capcom's nearly 20-year-old, genre-defining visual novel series. The games are standalone in that they do not tie into the overarching plot of the main entries, however they do rely on fan-service for certain characters and their connections to the main series.
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles releases on July 27, 2021, for PC, PlayStation 4, and Switch.

Investigation sequences see the player gathering clues from crime scenes and other areas of interest, while also interviewing suspects associated with the crime. The courtroom sections are where the Ace Attorney games shine, and in The Great Ace Attorney the player must influence a jury, which can interject proceedings at any time to attempt to hand down a "guilty" or not "guilty" verdict. This is on top of the cross-examination gameplay that the series is known for, where the player must use evidence to find contradictions in a witness' testimony.
While the new setting and characters are enough to separate The Great Ace Attorney from the Phoenix Wright and Apollo Justice titles, what makes the series especially unique for fans is that they are the most recent entries to be written and directed by series creator Shu Takumi. Takumi originally planned for the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney games to be a trilogy, but after supervising and writing Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, decided to leave the series to work on the underrated Nintendo DS gem Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective .
After the surprise announcement that Capcom is bringing The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles west, here is where they fall on the series timeline.
Optional spin-offs include the Shu Takumi co-written Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, a spin-off co-developed by Level 5 and Capcom that brings the two puzzle series' together in a surprisingly fleshed out, narrative driven crossover, and the Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth games. These titles focus on the investigation gameplay segments alone and follow Phoenix's rival prosecutor Miles Edgeworth. So far, only the first title has been localized for Nintendo DS, iOS, and Android, with the second game still Japan-exclusive.
The Adventure of the Great Departure: November 19, 1901 – November 22, 1901
Dai Gyakuten Saiban appears to be set in the Meiji Era (September 8, 1868 to July 30, 1912) and takes place in both Japan and London. Over the course of the game, we see lots of little hints that narrow down the timeline. For example, the streets of London have no automobiles ( the first driver’s license in London was issued in August 1903 ); and Sherlock Holmes is a predominate figure ( his adventures happen between 1877 and 1914 ).
You encounter Natsume in the game’s fourth chapter The Adventure of the Clouded Kokoro (the title is a mixture of the typical titling of Sherlock Holmes stories and Natsume’s novel Kokoro ). In this chapter, Natsume has been arrested for murder and Phoenix Wright’s ancestor takes the case to defend him in English court.

Dai Gyakuten Saiban, the latest game in the Ace Attorney series is set not in the near future but over 100 years in the past. The game never gives an exact year for its setting—but that doesn’t mean you can’t figure it out using a bit of real-world information.
The Ace Attorney series has always been concerned with the definition of justice. For the last 20 years, the games’ lawyer protagonists have defended wrongfully accused clients while attempting to tackle the corruption and unfairness of what is ultimately a broken legal system. They have questioned and explored what a fair outcome within those constraints looks like, and the moral responsibility of an individual working with them.
When Ryunosuke is accused of murder in the first case, an English woman called Jezaille Brett takes the stand. The culprits in opening Ace Attorney cases are always pretty obvious, giving the player the chance to learn the ropes, but The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles plays with this expectation. Jezaille’s appearance is more than a tutorial — it’s a thesis on what the game wants to say about the injustice of empire.
Ultimately, they argue that an individual attempting to do good under a system of injustice needs two things: perseverance and a good group of allies. Friendship and found family might not be able to dismantle systems of oppression, but they do make a difference in individual people’s lives.
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, recently localized after five years as a Japanese-exclusive title, is a spinoff that takes place in England and Japan during the Victorian and Meiji era. (Though packaged as one game, it includes two games, The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures and The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve .) The protagonist Ryunosuke Naruhodo is canonically an ancestor of main series protagonist Phoenix Wright, but this isn’t really necessary to tie the games together. They already share enough of the same functional and thematic DNA.
The two Great Ace Attorney games contain 5 episodes each, making for a total of 10 episodes in The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. And with each game taking about 30 hours to tell its story, the full Chronicles will span 60 hours of playtime.
The Great A ce Attorney Chronicles is available now for PC, PS4, and Switch.
The two games that make up The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles never made their way to the west upon their original 3DS releases. Worldwide fans missed out on the antics of new characters in The Great Ace Attorney until now. The story unfolds during Meiji-era Japan and Victorian-era Britain, with parodied versions of period-appropriate characters such as Sherlock Holmes making an appearance, although he's named Herlock Sholmes in the game. Fans everywhere can finally enjoy these whimsical tales, complete with new bonus features that extend the games' playtime.
Aside from that, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles can be enjoyed as a fully standalone experience. Gamers can enjoy the full length of the collection and its bonus contents without any prior knowledge of the franchise.
