Friday the 13th was truly unlucky in January of 2012 — it marked the end of the soap’s run on network television. At least for now. In retrospect, Agnes Nixon should probably have called it Two, Maybe Three Lives to Live. But as it was, in 1968 she launched just One Life to Live on ABC. And it was, in a word, magnificent.

The role was originated and played by actor Al Freeman Jr. from January 1972 until 1987, with a brief interruption in 1975. In the process, he earned a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1979, becoming the first actor from the show as well as the first African American to earn the award.
Freeman first appears in the role of Lieutenant Hall in January 1972 when Hall begins to lead an investigation into the murder of Marcy Wade ( Francesca James ), a secretary for the Lord family newspaper, The Banner.
Jessica, as you’d expect, would want to take the high road, leading readers toward kindness and compassion by eschewing the seedier side of politics and Llanview’s day-to-day. Natalie, on the other hand, would want to turn heads and attract eyeballs with whatever story was the most salacious on any given day.
What do you think, One Life to Live fans? Would you be keen on a primetime soap focused on Jessica and Natalie, with Viki as the angel on both of their shoulders and perhaps Dorian as the devil whispering in their ears? African American Sadie Gray lived in an apartment next door to the Wolek family and worked as the manager of housekeeping for Llanview Hospital.
Before Carla Gray, there had been no lead African American heroes (or heroines) on any daytime soap opera. Prior to creating One Life to Live, Agnes Nixon had worked as head writer on the NBC soap Another World and already attempted to integrate African-American characters and actors into that show, but with limited success.
