Investigation chapters are chapters in Ace Attorney games that occur outside of the courtroom. The protagonist usually searches for evidence, interviews witnesses, and investigates the scene of the crime.
This allows the protagonist to choose from one of up to four topics to discuss with a person in the current location. Sometimes, discussing one topic or doing something else will unlock another topic of discussion. From Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney onward, protagonists can access special items here - that is, Phoenix Wright's magatama and Apollo Justice 's bracelet - by or touching an icon at the top of the touchscreen (X). The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles calls this function "Converse".

Logic Chess is a gameplay feature in Gyakuten Kenji 2 that is used by Miles Edgeworth to draw information out of uncooperative witnesses. In contrast to Phoenix Wright's magatama, which serves a roughly similar purpose, Logic Chess has Edgeworth rely purely on reading the opponent's behavior and reacting accordingly, rather than collecting evidence to figure out a secret. The name "Logic Chess" does not literally refer to the use of logic or chess, but instead describes the mental struggle between Edgeworth and his opponent, with Edgeworth using various strategies to move the conversation in his favor. Additionally, the name "Logic Chess" is never explicitly referred to within the in-game dialogue, and only appears at the beginning and end of each match. Consequently, it is purely an out-of-universe gameplay term.

The Ace Attorney series has never reached a true level of excellence. While there are some really strong elements added for Miles Edgeworth, the core is still trial-and-error gameplay. Some of the logic left me scratching my head and it's entirely too linear.

The Ace Attorney Investigations spin-off series splits the gameplay into investigation phases and rebuttal phases , the latter of which is similar to the courtroom trials of the main series. During the investigation phases, the player searches for evidence and talks to witnesses and suspects. Things the player character notices in the environment are saved as thoughts; the player can use the "logic" system to connect two such thoughts to gain access to new information. At some points, the player can create hologram reproductions of the crime scene, through which they can discover new information that would otherwise be hidden. Ace Attorney Investigations 2 introduces "logic chess", where the player interrogates witnesses in a timed sequence that is visualized as a game of chess, with the player aiming to destroy the other character's chess pieces. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is a compilation of both Adventures and Resolve to be released in July 2021 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Microsoft Windows. This will be the first time both games are officially available outside of Japan.
