· Aug 2, 2019 Kathleen Kane has a few reasons to be bitter. The former attorney general left prison Wednesday after serving eight months for leaking grand jury information and lying about it during her 2 ½ years in office.
· Kane, who turned 53 last month, was convicted of perjury, official oppression, and other offenses in 2016 and sentenced to a term of 10 to 23 months. Her conviction climaxed a stunning fall for Kane, a political neophyte from the Scranton area who swept into office in 2012 with a vote tally that exceeded the count for President Barack Obama.
Kane said she would use the attorney general's office to cultivate partnerships with district attorneys and the U.S. attorney general to ensure against jurisdictional constraints and conflicts of interest in the investigation and prosecution of corrupt public officials. “Political corruption cases are no place for a prosecutorial ‘turf-war’ to be waged,” Kane said in response to a questionnaire distributed by The Legal Intelligencer in April.
In a move that won her the crucial endorsement of former President Bill Clinton (D) years later, Kane left her post at the district attorney's office in 2007 to coordinate Hillary Rodham Clinton 's presidential primary campaign in Northeast Pennsylvania.
A major focus of her 2012 campaign revolved around former Attorney General Tom Corbett 's (R) three-year long investigation into Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky. Corbett was criticized for taking so much time to arrest and charge Sandusky, and his handling of the matter appeared to hurt Republicans; Kane was able to use this to her advantage. After being in office for less than a month, Kane appointed a special prosecutor to investigate the Sandusky case.
In December 2014, a grand jury issued a presentment to the supervising judge finding reasonable grounds to believe violations of criminal law had occurred. The judge accepted the presentment, finding probable cause to support the grand jury’s determination and to establish a case against Kane.
Kane won election to the position of Pennsylvania Attorney General in 2012. During that election cycle, Kane raised a total of $5,722,825 .
In November 2018, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court rejected Kane's appeal, requiring her to serve out her sentence of 10 to 23 months in jail and eight years probation. Read more about the criminal case against Kane here.
Kane was ordered to stand trial. On October 14, 2015, Kane waived her arraignment and pleaded not guilty to all charges. On August 15, 2016, a jury found her guilty on all 12 charges. In October 2016, Montgomery County Judge Wendy Demchick-Alloy sentenced Kane to 10 to 23 months in jail and eight years probation.
Adding to that, Kane took down members of the judicial and legal community after revelations of pornographic emails surfaced.
The 53-year-old walked out of the Montgomery County Correctional Facility around 8:20 a.m. When asked how she felt, Kane responded “grateful.” While it’s unclear what she’s grateful for, she was emotional.
Kane was released two months earlier than the low range of her 10-23 month sentence. Montgomery County officials tell Eyewitness News she was credited time for good behavior. A political novice, Kane was embraced by Pennsylvania democrats and quickly rose to become attorney general.

CBS Philadelphia reports Kane had requested probation or house arrest so she could be home to raise her two teenage sons. She argued that the loss of her career, her law license, and her reputation was punishment enough.
Earlier Monday, Kane’s 15-year-old son pleaded for leniency while her former deputies described an office demoralized by her leadership and terrorized by “Nixonian espionage.”
Judge Wendy Demchick-Alloy said Kane assumed an “off with your heads” mentality as she ran the state’s top law enforcement agency. The judge called Kane a political “neophyte” who failed to make the transition from campaigner to public servant after she took office.
The one-term attorney general said her younger son, 14-year-old Zachary, did not attend Monday’s sentencing because “he couldn’t even bear it.”
But turmoil inside the office became apparent as top deputies and career prosecutors headed for the doors. Kane’s feud with one of them, Frank Fina, who had helped run the Penn State probe and other sensitive investigations, led to the leak.
Kane was the first woman and first Democrat elected as the state’s top prosecutor. She was led out a side door with her hands cuffed in front of her, flanked by deputies.
Former deputy Clarke Madden said the cloud permeated every corner of the office, as victims, witnesses and other law enforcement agencies feared working with them. The office itself was in constant turmoil.

The day after her release, former Sheriff John Green was sentenced to 5 years in prison for accepting bribes and kickbacks from a friend over nine years. Green’s gross abuse of the public trust went on for years. You can guess how many references were made to his appearance and hairstyle on sentencing: zero.
Kane, a political neophyte, made many mistakes in office. We wonder if one of them was timing. The Porngate scandal broke over 2015 and 2016. In October 2017, the first piece covering the Harvey Weinstein investigation led to a widespread #MeToo movement and heightened sensitivity to and awareness of aggression toward women by men abusing their power.
As it was, much of the response from emailers was defending the “boys will be boys” mentality. Kane’s release from prison can now serve as a reminder that misogyny is alive and well in the commonwealth. Contempt and hatred for women and minorities have not been eliminated from our government or institutions.
Her other crime — being smart, powerful, attractive — comes with a longer sentence. Sadly, she won’t be released from that until she gets too old to be sexual ly objectified by men.
