Pros. You get management experience. You get to understand how things work behind the scenes. Cons. They do no show appreciation for anyone of character or smart. They will use you, prevent you from moving up so they can take advantage of your talents on the cheap. Only if you are unscrupulous and lazy do you get promoted.

Let's be honest. Job security and retirement benefits are the main "perk" of federal employment. This job does allow some telework, but the current administration is attempting to end it and has already eliminated it for some groups of employees (e.g. paralegals), so don't count on this remaining available.
Social Security Administration is a decent place to work. Many people become complacent and are stuck in positions until they retire. I loved the flexibility but not the coworkers that did less than the bare minimum or didn't bother to do the job correctly. No accountability at all.
Overall the work environment is not bad. Most employees are very helpful. A few employees can be total brown nosers. The work itself isn't challenging and can be repetitive at times.
