Don’t waste a day in jail or pay an unnecessary fine, if the right advice can lead to dismissal or probation. Criminal defense attorneys are an important part of the criminal justice system because they advocate for their clients and ensure that justice is done by following the law.
Even misdemeanors can be sentenced with jail time. Any conviction, whether it is probation or prison, has serious consequences. No matter the charge you are facing, a criminal defense attorney can advocate for you. Every case is different. An experienced attorney can review your case and help determine the best course of action. If there is insufficient evidence or evidence obtained without probable cause, the attorney may be able to get charges dismissed. When you know that you will be convicted, an attorney can negotiate a plea bargain with the prosecution and possibly negotiate a lesser charge or sentence. Whatever the circumstances, an attorney can analyze your case and discuss your options.

Other English speaking countries may use the alternate version: defence. When referring to defense attorneys, in the United States, the defense version is used. Law enforcement has a duty to uphold certain procedures when they are processing an arrest. If they do not follow these proper procedures, this tarnishes your case. A good criminal defense attorney will be able to go through the entire process and make sure that no evidence has been tampered with, no witnesses have been coerced, and nothing else is out of place. Even something simple as the process by which an officer gathers evidence is highly controlled. Your attorney can make sure that they follow the procedure accurately because if they did not, you could have the entire case dismissed.
The most beneficial aspect of having an experienced criminal defense attorney is that they are going to have experience with cases similar to yours. While this may be the first time that you have ever had to deal with your particular case, chances are very good that your attorney has gone through cases similar to yours dozens of times. This means that they can help you navigate the process with ease, and they know the ways to get your case resolved in the best possible manner. They will be able to navigate the system like a seasoned veteran which can help your case get taken care of faster.
Generally, it’s recommended that you hire a criminal defense attorney whenever charged with a crime. In some cases, you’ll also want to use the services of a defense lawyer when you’re questioned by police.
By working to pick and choose desired jurors, a defense attorney can increase his or her client’s chances of a successful trial outcome. Due to its importance, seasoned lawyers will often hire juror selection specialists to help them with this task.
When it comes to researching the case, interviewing the client is only the tip of the iceberg. Defense lawyers must perform an extensive investigation. This involves speaking to police officers, witnesses, and experts.
This process is plea bargaining, and it is a negotiation between the prosecuting attorneys and defense attorneys. A talented defense attorney will often be able to strike up a deal for his or her client. This deal often results in less prison time, smaller fines, and similarly reduced sentences.
A defense attorney is a specific type of attorney who defends criminally charged individuals in a court of law. Defendants charged with a crime either hire a defense attorney themselves or have an attorney appointed to them by the court system.
After gathering witness and police statements, the defense attorney will turn to the evidence involved in the case. He or she will examine this evidence thoroughly, trying to figure out how it will affect the trial and the perceptions of jurors.
While in court, defense lawyers will hear testimonies, speak to jurors, and cross-examine witnesses and experts. This is all done in an effort to sway the jury’s opinion toward the side of the client.
He was our second President. And yet it was his service as a criminal defense lawyer in a contentious and politically charged murder trial that he believed was perhaps his greatest achievement. What a tribute to the strength of his belief in the importance of criminal defense lawyers to the meaning of freedom in this country.
Adams believed that railroading the accused in an unfair trial to serve political purposes would have been an ugly stain upon our newly forming free country. It was absolutely critical that those British soldiers receive a fair trial represented by competent counsel. John Adams knew it, and ultimately so did the people who made him our second President. John Adams not only took the job, but he won the case. And it took a great Patriot like John Adams to have the nerve to stand up against great public outcry and speak the truth – for freedom’s sake.
So important was it to Adams to see that the British soldiers in the Boston Massacre case were represented by a lawyer, that he accepted the job at great personal risk. He believed that representing the soldiers in the murder trial would be highly unpopular, but he did it anyway.
When the vast and virtually unlimited resources of the Government are arrayed against a person accused of a crime, someone like me is guaranteed a chance to stand up for the accused. No matter what. It is a fundamental principle of our freedom. The honor of my job seemed to be self-evident to our Founding Fathers.

Defense attorneys—at least the ones I have met and spoken with over the past 17 years—have different ways of expressing how they can “represent those people” but their explanations always boil down to the same essence: to be a defense attorney is to be a instrument that reduces the great imbalance that exists in the relationship between the government and the governed. In “defending those people,” the guilty and the innocent, the righteous and the profane, defense attorneys are eternally challenging the State to be fairer, more accurate, and more just. That may not be your choice of career but that doesn’t make it an ignoble one.

Promote Fair Courts. It surely is a sign of some great cosmic conspiracy that Jacques Verges, one of the most famous defense attorneys of all time, a man who unapologetically defended the Khmer Rouge, Carlos the Jackal, and countless other international villains and rogues, would die the very same week that Abbe Smith and Monroe H.
The words of Clarence Darrow, the greatest American defense attorney, sadly are not included in Smith and Freedman’s book.
