Geoffrey Berman, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, said on Friday that he had learned he was "stepping down" in a press release. Mr Berman insisted he would stay in post and continue his investigations.
They included the president's former lawyer Michael Cohen, who has served a prison sentence for lying to Congress and election campaign finance fraud. Mr Berman's department has also been investigating the conduct of Rudy Giuliani, Mr Trump's current personal lawyer.

Instead of disputing the Trump campaign's claim, Sidney issued a statement of her own saying that she would still be looking into claims of election fraud as a private citizen.
On Nov. 14, just eight days before they released their statement, Trump released a tweet announcing that Sidney would be part of his legal team.

In a resignation letter sent to the president, Sessions thanked Trump "for the opportunity" to be attorney general. He also listed what he considered his accomplishments during his tenure.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., vowed to protect Mueller, saying it would create a constitutional crisis if Session’s departure were a prelude to ending, or greatly limiting, Mueller’s investigation.
