Trump's impeachment came after a formal House inquiry alleged that he had solicited foreign interference in the 2020 U.S. presidential election to help his re-election bid, and then obstructed the inquiry itself by telling his administration officials to ignore subpoenas for documents and testimony.
Trump had been impeached for the second time by the House of Representatives on January 13, 2021. The House adopted one article of impeachment against Trump: incitement of insurrection. He is the only U.S. president and only federal official to be impeached twice and acquitted a second time.

Senators, who rarely sit at their desks for long periods of time during the Senate's regular business, mostly sat in silence and watched during the day's proceedings, acting as the rough equivalent of jurors in the trial. Some took notes or whispered with colleagues, filing in and out at various moments. Others looked tired after days of marathon testimony.
