Vermont's highest office will be at stake in November, along with several other state executive positions.
Dozens of primary elections are being held Tuesday to narrow the field of candidates for seats within the Vermont Legislature.
Minor party candidates are nominated by party committee in order to be placed on the ballot in the General Election (November 3, 2020). The statements of nomination, financial disclosure and consent of candidate forms must be filed by the designated political party committee no sooner than Monday, April 27, 2020 and no later than 5 p.m.
For the 2020 Primary and General Election, candidates DO NOT need to collect signatures to qualify for the ballot. Candidates must still hand in their consent of candidate form and any relevant financial documents with the appropriate official (see list below).
All 30 seats in the Vermont Senate and all 150 seats of the Vermont House of Representatives were up for election. The balance of political power remained the same in each chamber with Democrats having large majorities in both, however Republicans made very small gains in both chambers. While those gains were small, they allowed Republicans to break the Democrat/Progressive supermajority in the state house. This could potentially lead to any veto from Governor Phil Scott being upheld under these new circumstances.
All of Vermont's executive officers will be up for election as well as Vermont's at-large seat in the United States House of Representatives. Primary elections were held on August 11, 2020.
Cris Ericson (P*), perennial candidate. (*Hoffer won the Democratic and Republican nominations. Ericson, who is not a member of the Progressive Party, won the primary election, however the Progressive state committee endorsed Hoffer for reelection.
