John Albert Gardner III (born April 9, 1979) is an American convicted double murderer and sex offender. He confessed to the rape and murder of 14-year-old Amber Dubois from Escondido, California, the February 2010 rape and murder of 17-year-old Chelsea King from Poway, California, not far from Gardner's mother's home, where he lived, in the Rancho Bernardo community.

John Albert Gardner III uttered just a single word during a court appearance Wednesday. Gardner, suspected in the rape and slaying of 17-year-old Chelsea King last week, was in court for an arraignment.
Gardner was charged with four felony counts in March of 2000 after he beat and sexually assaulted a 13-year old. According to court records, Gardner’s 2000 victim said “he had his hand on my mouth and I couldn’t breathe and I got pretty fuzzy after he hit me and I’m not sure if I blacked out.”.
Gardner, who was arrested outside the restaurant Hernandez' Hideaway in Escondido, is not cooperating with sheriff’s investigators. The 30-year old lives near Lake Elsinore but had been staying with his mother and stepfather on Matinal Road in Rancho Bernardo.
The county medical examiner's office worked to confirm King's body. An investigator was meeting with King's parents at their Poway home, said Lenore Aldridge, a medical investigator. It was not clear if fingerprints, dental records or other methods of identification were being used.

The PHU offers education programs, contact visits, jobs, phone calls and televisions in the inmates’ cells. “There is a designated day for PHU inmates to go to the law library in a nearby facility,” Thornton said. “When PHU inmates are in the law library, there are no other general population inmates there.”.
Thornton said the PHU – designated for high-profile inmates segregated from other inmates – was activated at the facility in 1992. It’s a small unit with only 24 cells and a maximum capacity of 47 inmates but typically only houses between 15 and 25 offenders.
