1. What made the fibers found on the victims unusual? The yellow-green nylon fibers were unusual; coarse and tri-lobed in cross section the fibers appeared to be those used in rugs or carpets. However, police were unable to determine the manufacturer of the fibers.

Expert witnesses testified that it was highly unlikely that any environment other than that present in Wayne Williams' house and car could have produced the combination of fibers and hairs found on the victims, especially when there were so many varied origins.

Before Wayne Williams became a suspect in the Nathaniel Cater murder case, the Georgia State Crime Laboratory located a number of yellowish-green nylon fibers and some violet acetate fibers on the bodies and clothing of the murder victims whose bodies had been recovered during the period of July 1979 to May 1981.
The story was taken up by FBI Special Agent Gregg Gulliland. After being stopped, Williams had given conflicting reasons for being on the bridge, then blurted out, "What's all this about? … I know. This is about those boys, isn't it?"
Evidence of Williams' aggressive homosexuality came from two young men who testified that he had made unwanted advances toward them.
The expected lengthy jury deliberation actually took less than 12 hours. On February 27, 1982, Williams was convicted of double murder. That same day, Judge Clarence Cooper imposed two consecutive life terms.
Although forensic evidence connected Williams, a 23-year-old black homosexual music promoter, with many of the Atlanta killings, he was charged on only two counts. Williams' trial began December 28, 1981. Following an adjournment for the holidays, testimony got under way on January 6, 1982.
In the years following his conviction, Wayne Williams has maintained his innocence. His conviction ended any further investigation into the murders of the 22 other victims. Since the conviction, Williams has gained support from many unlikely people, including relatives of some of the victims, former investigators who worked on the cases, and even a retired Georgia State Supreme Court justice.

On June 21, 1981 , Williams was arrested, and on February 27, 1982, he was found guilty of the murders of Cater and another man, Jimmy Ray Payne, 21. The conviction was based on physical evidence—matching fibers found on the victims and in Williams’s personal possessions—and eyewitness accounts, and he was sentenced to two consecutive life terms.
Wayne Williams was born in Atlanta in 1958. In the midst of a rash of child murders in the late 1970s and early 1980s, fibers found on one victim matched those found in Williams's car and home, and he was arrested. Although labeled the Atlanta Child Murders, the case resulted in Williams only being found guilty of the murder of two adults.
Once the trial was over, law-enforcement officials declared their belief that evidence suggested that Williams was most likely linked to another 20 of the 29 deaths the task force had been investigating. DNA sequencing from hairs found on different victims revealed a match to Williams’s own hair, to 98 percent certainty.
While subsequent efforts — led by his own protestations — were mounted to prove Williams innocent, the killings stopped once he was imprisoned.
From the time of his arrest on June 21, 1981, Wayne Williams has maintained his innocence. Law-enforcement agencies did an effective job, however, of arguing that Williams was involved with at least two of the murders.
A Loud Splash Led to the Arrest of Suspect Wayne Williams. After the FBI joined the hunt for the Atlanta child murderer, analysts reportedly predicted that the suspect was likely to dump his next victim into a body of water. As a result, stakeouts were set up around 12 bridges throughout the area.
Lindsey talked to CrimeFeed about his conversations with Williams, saying, “He stands by his innocence of all the murders, so that’s the grounds for a lot of our conversations. There are eyewitnesses who place other people at the scene of these crimes, so we continue to talk to these eyewitnesses and get their accounts.”
Wayne Williams stood trial in 1982 for the murders of Nathaniel Cater and Jimmy Ray Payne. He was found guilty and ordered to serve two consecutive life sentences. As noted by many observers, once police caught Williams, the Atlanta Child Murders, as they had existed, stopped.
