Throughout the film the greatest difference between Erin and other professionals involved in the case is that Erin takes everything to heart. She meets the people as a person, interacting with them attentively and relating to them on a real level. She is, basically, more human in her work than the others are.
The women at work give Erin the cold shoulder, refusing to help her when she asks, not inviting her to lunch with them. This simple interaction between Erin and her older male boss, Ed, reveals many things at once. One, a woman (Erin) being treated poorly by fellow women due to prejudice based on sexist ideas. Two, Erin refusing to be shamed, merely aware that she is separate from what other women consider "right". And then there is Ed, a man so unaffected by such social prejudice that he has to ask why she's left out.
Erin repeatedly cites the fact that she has three children to feed, and throughout the film, much of her identity is tied to her role as a mother. The film touches on the difficulties of being a single mother with many children, and at its start centers on Erin's difficulty finding a job.
Julia Roberts' rendition of Erin is famous for its iconic wit. She is a sharp thinker, a fast talker and slick in doling out insults. Erin storms into Ed's office and faces off with him for his bad behavior in not answering her phone calls. In front of his entire office, she demands that he give her a job.
While she is listing off all of the ways in which he has behaved unacceptably to her, she catches the eye of a co-worker and calls her out for blatantly watching the interaction with jaw dropped. Erin often makes a spectacle, but will not be seen as ridiculous.
She exposes the absolute ignorance of the lawyers in suggesting that these people who suffer every day are driven at all by greed or ideals of glamour. Such an assertion assumes that members of the lower class exist in a state of self-conscious inferiority, always striving to be more accepted by social standards. Aside from illness, Erin has been one of these people, and she knows better.
