By The Associated Press. LAS VEGAS — A court on Wednesday approved a settlement totaling $800 million from casino company MGM Resorts International and its insurers to more than 4,400 relatives and victims of the Las Vegas Strip shooting that was the deadliest in recent U.S. history.
The action makes final a deal settling dozens of lawsuits on the eve of the third anniversary of the mass shooting that killed 58 people and injured more than 850 at an open-air concert near the Mandalay Bay resort.
Perpetrator. Stephen Paddock. Motive. Unknown. On the evening of October 1, 2017, Stephen Paddock , a 64-year-old man from Mesquite, Nevada, opened fire upon the crowd attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada.
^ Fifty-eight people died at the scene or in hospitals soon afterwards. A female survivor who died from complications of her injuries on November 15, 2019 was officially declared as a fatality in the shooting in August 2020. Another female survivor also died from gunshot wound complications on May 26, 2020 and was reported as a fatality in the shooting in September. The Las Vegas police updated the official death toll from 58 to 60 on October 1, 2020, the third anniversary of the shooting.
On September 17, 2020, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported the May 26 death of a 49-year-old Nevada woman who had been shot in the leg during the shooting; she died from complications ensuing from that wound. As with the woman who died in 2019, the LVMPD declined to include her in the death toll.
The Las Vegas Strip is a stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard immediately south of the city of Las Vegas in Clark County, Nevada. The Strip is known for its concentration of casinos and resort hotels, including the 43-story Mandalay Bay southwest of its intersection with Mandalay Bay Road, in the unincorporated town of Paradise.

Susan Smith. Susan Smith, 53, was a victim of the Las Vegas shooting, Jake Finch, a Simi Valley Schools spokeswoman confirmed. Smith worked for Simi Valley School District in California for 16 years, serving as the office manager at Vista Fundamental Elementary School for three years, Finch said.
