Burr was married three times. His first wife, Annette Sutherland, an Englishwoman, was killed in 1943 when the plane in which she was traveling was shot down by the Germans. William Talman was born in Detroit, Michigan. He founded the drama club at the Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and acted while studying at Dartmouth College and The University of Michigan. After graduating college, William joined a stock company to begin his stage acting career.
