On Monday, he was awarded $1.5 million to settle a lawsuit for his wrongful conviction, the Kansas State Attorney General's office announced. McIntyre was 17 years old when he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the 1994 murders of Donald Ewing and Doniel Quinn.
Niko Quinn and Stacy Quinn signed sworn affidavits saying that McIntyre was too tall, his face was too long, and his ears stuck out too much to have been the person they saw. But following an evidentiary hearing in 1996, Judge J. Dexter Burdette declined to grant McIntyre a new trial.
More than 20 years later, on October 13, 2017 , in the midst of another evidentiary hearing and in the face of a cascade of evidence of police and prosecutorial misconduct, Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree abruptly rose and announced that the prosecution agreed that McIntyre’s conviction should be vacated.
After a three-day trial, the jury convicted McIntyre of both counts of first-degree murder. He was sentenced to two consecutive terms of life in prison. Less than a year later, the case began to unravel. Stacy Quinn, Niko Quinn’s sister, had been across the street from the shooting.
Lamonte McIntyre embraces his mother upon release. At about 2 p.m. on April 15, 1994, a man carrying a shotgun ran down a hill toward the 3000 block of Hutchings Street in Kansas City, Kansas. He walked to the passenger side of a parked Cadillac and blasted out the window in an explosion of glass.

In seeking McIntyre’s release, Pilate raised questions of bias in the original trial because of a past and undisclosed romantic relationship between Morehead and the Wyandotte County District judge presiding over McIntyre’s case, J. Dexter Burdette.
Minutes before trial was to begin, Orozco asked for the trial to be delayed because he had just received the new evidence.
Percival decided to plead guilty and cooperate with the government’s case against other defendants, but was still sentenced in 2015 to 10 years in prison. Percival’s attorneys objected to the sentence, saying it did not square with his culpability or reflect the assistance he offered to the government’s case.
That morning, Morehead filed information in court to establish a prior conviction on Orozco’s record, which would have doubled the mandatory minimum sentence, raising it from 10 to 20 years.
By Wednesday morning, he was released. In freeing Orozco, Robinson employed what she called the “extraordinary, rarely-invoked remedy” of dismissing the charges with prejudice so that prosecutors could not again pursue them.
Tuesday’s order vacating Orozco’s convictions on charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, and possession of a smaller amount, came with scathing criticisms of Morehead’s conduct in the case.

Since being released, McIntyre co-founded a nonprofit, Miracle of Innocence, to help others who are wrongfully convicted. He also is the co-owner and student instructor at Headlines Barber Academy in Kansas City. "I'm not angry," McIntyre told CNN affiliate KMBC in an interview last year.

McIntyre testified in support of the measure before a state Senate committee in 2018. "The state of Kansas can't give me back the 23 years it took from me," he said in his testimony.
McIntyre's is the third lawsuit to be resolved under the new statute, according to the attorney general's office. Three other cases are currently pending litigation. "We are going to help innocent people come home," McIntyre told KMBC.
