Caldwell, defended by legendary Minnesota defense attorney Doug Thomson, stood trial in Brainerd, Minnesota. John DeSanto, just 28 years old, led the prosecution and Caldwell was convicted and sent to prison. After Caldwell’s trial, Marjorie was arrested and stood trial in Hastings, defended by another Minnesota legal legend, Ron Meshbesher.
While Marjorie stood to inherit millions after her mother's death, she actually got a pittance in comparison. A civil suit filed by five of her seven children in 1979 to disinherit their mother from her inheritance on the grounds she was involved in the murders was settled out of court in 1983.Jun 24, 2017

Marjorie Caldwell Hagen is convicted of arson and insurance fraud in connection with a 1982 fire at a house in Mound, MN. She is sentenced to 2.5 years in prison. On June 27, 1977 at 3:00am, Elisabeth Congdon and her nurse Velma Pietila (born April 26, 1911) were found murdered. Elisabeth was found suffocated with a satin pillow in her bed and Velma, who was lying on a window seat, had been beaten to death with a candlestick.
