Leo Branton Jr.Leo Branton Jr., a California lawyer whose moving closing argument in a racially and politically charged murder trial in 1972 helped persuade an all-white jury to acquit a black communist, the activist and academic Angela Davis, died on April 19 in Los Angeles.
The person in charge of the kidnapping was George Jackson's younger brother, Jonathan Peter Jackson, aged 17. Two days before the kidnapping, former UCLA instructor Angela Davis purchased a shotgun from a pawn shop in San Francisco. After Davis paid for the shotgun, its barrel was sawed off so as to be concealable.
The guns that Jackson used were registered to political activist Angela Davis, who previously formed a committee supporting the Soledad Brothers. Davis stood trial for alleged involvement in the kidnapping and was acquitted of all charges in June 1972.
Known widely for her critique of the prison industrial complex, Davis discussed the movement of prison and police abolition into mainstream discourse in the aftermath of the police murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
Fleeta Drumgo, a Soledad Brother acquitted in 1972 of charges of killing a prison guard, is a repeated target of the prison authorities. The State admits that it has no direct evidence against any of these men.
