In 1974, Time magazine researchers learned, and informed Nicholson, that his "sister", June, was actually his mother, and his other "sister", Lorraine, was really his aunt. By this time, both his mother and grandmother had died (in 1963 and 1970, respectively).
Randolph says that Eli seems busy and Halloran offers the excuse of Ethan’s death. Randolph notes that Halloran attended the funeral and he explains that he is Eli’s friend. Randolph and Lathrop note the complications of a personal relationship with your boss.
Randolph installs her team in the post office in Atlantic City because it is the only federal building available. Her men are her chief investigator Clifford Lathrop and two clerks, Pratt and Halsey. Randolph annoys her new colleague Prohibition Agent Nelson Van Alden by taking over his desk. Van Alden demands to know why they are there and why they have taken over his office. She says that her investigation into Nucky’s election rigging takes precedence over his work. Lathrop points out that they have moved Van Alden’s things to another desk. Van Alden complains about the lack of notice. Randolph reminds him of the need for discretion regarding her team’s activities and he is offended, citing his oath of office. Randolph instructs Lathrop to search Absecon bay for ballot boxes that one of their confidential witnesses claims were dumped there because they were filled with non-republican votes. Lathrop asks Van Alden where he might be able to buy wading boots for the search. Van Alden ignores the question and says they will be eaten alive. Lathrop misunderstands and Van Alden clarifies that he means they will not get a conviction. Randolph asks why and learns that he believes the level of corruption is insurmountable; she sarcastically dismisses his concern. (" Peg of Old ")
She tells Wallbridge that she is willing to drop arguing for the death penalty if Eli agrees to testify against Nucky. (" Under God's Power She Flourishes ") Randolph convenes a meeting of her team at their post office headquarters on July 26 1921. Van Alden sits in the partitioned section, staring at papers.
Lathrop opens the card and reads the message; “You're a peach, thanks for saving my life.” ("Two Boats and a Lifeguard") Nucky requests permission to take his father's body to Ireland for burial, which Randolph grants. Randolph enjoys a post coital cigarette in her hotel room; Lathrop lies next to her.
Randolph states that she plans to pursue Eli Thompson and Nucky’s aldermen. Lathrop relays that they have already questioned some of the aldermen and Ginsburg interrupts to assert his right to review the transcripts of these sessions. Randolph agrees and teases that they make fascinating reading.
Randolph asks if Nucky knows Torrio, Nucky denies a connection. Randolph insists that Nucky knows Torrio and Nucky wonders why she bothered asking.
Nucky jokes that he considers himself an artichoke and says that he wants to go on the record that the charges are baseless. Randolph reminds Nucky that the meeting is informal and Ginsburg wonders if they are pushing for a plea deal. Nucky says he would decline any such offer and maintains his innocence.

I had all these pictures on my wall and I thought, 'I'd really better write some good stuff for these people. ' " In casting the role of Nucky Thompson (based upon real-life Atlantic City political boss Enoch L. Johnson ), Winter wanted to stray from the real life Johnson as much as possible. "If we were going to cast accurately what the real Nucky looked like, we'd have cast Jim Gandolfini ." The idea of casting Steve Buscemi in the lead role came about when Scorsese mentioned wanting to work with the actor, whom Winter knew well having worked with him on The Sopranos. Winter sent the script out to Buscemi, who responded very enthusiastically. "I just thought, 'Wow. I'm almost sorry I've read this, because if I don't get it, I'm going to be so sad.' My response was 'Terry, I know you're looking at other actors'... and he said, 'No, no, Steve, I said we want you. ' " Explained Scorsese, "I love the range he has, his dramatic sense, but also his sense of humor."
Steve Buscemi as Enoch "Nucky" Thompson – the corrupt treasurer of Atlantic County and its most powerful political figure. He is often involved with various mafias and mobs out of New York and Chicago, as well as bootlegging liquor throughout Atlantic City. He is loosely based on the Atlantic City political boss Enoch L. Johnson.
Daugherty courts Walter Edge, the Senator for New Jersey and a fellow Republican, for the Vice Presidential candidacy. He throws a reception at the beginning of the conference and invites Edge. Edge sends Nucky Thompson in his place. Harding is not considered a front runner for the nomination and faces competition from General Wood and Governor of Illinois Frank Orren Lowden. (" Hold Me in Paradise ")
In the first season Daugherty is the campaign manager for senator and candidate for the Republican presidential nomination Warren Harding. Daugherty and Harding go to Chicago, Illinois for the 1920 Republican National Convention.
Nucky offers to sequester Britton with Margaret in Atlantic City until Harding is elected and says that he expects to receive his road funding in return. Daugherty says he will need to sell the idea to Harding and Nucky asserts that Daugherty must be quite the salesman.
Nucky promises to put the Jersey delegation behind Harding if things go as they have predicted. Daugherty assumes that Nucky wants Edge to be nominated for Vice President in return. Nucky asks for the opposite and Daugherty asks what he is missing.
Nucky tells him that he needs to go home urgently. He tells Daugherty that he has made enquiries and has been told by Judge Graves that Daugherty is a good man. Daugherty asserts that Graves told Nucky that he “plays ball”. Nucky wonders if this is true and Daugherty compares himself to Babe Ruth.
Nucky tells Harding that he read a speech he gave in May entitled “Back to Normal” and compliments him on the content. Harding jokes that he could spend hours bloviating and expands on his belief that American’s want stability. Nucky is distracted by the cries of the baby and Daugherty moves Harding on.
In the changing room Nucky complains about Darmody. Nucky refutes Darmody’s claims that he fought for democracy and tells the others that Darmody enlisted because he could not cope with studying at Princeton. Daugherty is more concerned with his expanding waistline.
Promotional image for season 2 of Boardwalk Empire. Margaret Catherine Sheila Thompson is a fictional character in the HBO crime drama series Boardwalk Empire, portrayed by Kelly Macdonald. An Irish immigrant living in 1920s Atlantic City, New Jersey, she is the mistress and eventual wife ...
One night, she notices Nucky's alderman Jim Neary ( Robert Clohessy) supervising the unloading of a beer truck nearby her house and, when Nucky brushes aside her request for help to the Temperance League, tells Prohibition officer Nelson Van Alden ( Michael Shannon) where the beer is being delivered.
After Margaret recovers, Nucky gets her a job as a salesgirl at a boutique. Margaret and Nucky become close, with Nucky particularly impressed by her willingness to stand up to his associate Senator Walter Edge ( Geoff Pierson) during a discussion about women's suffrage.
Their idyll is threatened when Nucky is arrested for electoral fraud, with bribery and murder charges on the horizon. Margaret goes to Nucky's office, which is being searched by the New Jersey State Police, and steals the incriminating ledger to protect Nucky.
One night, when Eli gets shot during a robbery of one of Nucky's illegal casinos, Nucky asks Margaret to retrieve a ledger from a safe; the ledger details Nucky's profits from bootlegging. Shortly thereafter, she is with Nucky when two of the D'Alessio brothers attempt to assassinate him on the boardwalk.
The hit fails and Owen's dead body is shipped back to Nucky's hotel suite in a box . Margaret bursts into tears at the sight of Owen's body, leading Nucky to realize the affair the two had been having, but nevertheless arranges for her and the children to hide from Masseria's men.
Margaret learns that her brother and sisters are living in Brooklyn. She visits and tries to reconnect with them, but her brother forbids her to contact them again. She returns home deeply depressed, and sleeps with Nucky's right-hand man Owen Sleater ( Charlie Cox) to numb the pain.
Boardwalk Empire takes place predominantly in Atlantic City, but most of its shooting locations were in the greater New York City area. So when Winter noticed that a major scene calling for a big Ku Klux Klan meeting in the season one episode “Anastasia” was scheduled to be shot in Harlem, he was “a little nervous.”.
Boardwalk Empire, created by former Sopranos writer and executive producer Terence Winter, was a lavish drama set in the freewheeling 1920s, while exposing the dark, seedy underbelly of the Prohibition era. ...
In the season two episode “ Two Boats and a Lifeguard ,” Angela Darmody (Aleksa Palladino) witnesses a fellow female beachgoer get fined for what was then considered indecent exposure: not covering her legs with stockings. Not only were these modesty patrols a common sight at beaches during the 1920s ( click here for a cringe-worthy photo of a male cop measuring a woman’s bare thigh), but according to this New York Times clipping, the Boardwalk scene in question was likely based on an actual incident: The year and location match up (Atlantic City, 1921), and the woman arrested was named Louise—just like Angela’s eventual new bedmate.
Although it’s only been four years since Boardwalk had its last call, with Nucky paying the ultimate price for his decades of power-hungry greed, there is still much about this often-overlooked show that deserves to be celebrated.
Following its fourth season, which took place in 1924, Boardwalk Empire ’s story lines took a pretty hard turn: The fifth and final outing skipped ahead seven years to 1931, placing the series’ unscrupulous characters at the twilight of Prohibition.
In reality, the legendary numbers fixer had the bad sense to die in 1928, putting Stuhlbarg out of a job for Boardwalk ’s fifth season and turning the character into a footnote. 12. IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE SERIES EVER PRODUCED. HBO.
MICHAEL STUHLBARG SCHOOLED THE BOARDWALK WRITERS ON ARNOLD ROTHSTEIN. Michael Stuhlbarg ( The Shape of Water; Call Me By Your Name), who portrayed notorious gambler Arnold Rothstein for four seasons, had done so much research on his character that Winter brought him in to educate the show’s writers on the man.
