After a brief introduction establishing that Mars is not a "dead planet", but rather a dying one inhabited by warring civilizations with great airships, the film begins in 1881 with news of the sudden death in Richmond, Virginia, of John Carter ( Taylor Kitsch ), a former Confederate Army cavalry officer, who has become an eccentric and wealthy scholar-adventurer. The arrival of his nephew Edgar Rice Burroughs (Daryl Sabara)—"Ned"—at his "Uncle Jack's" funeral reveals that, in accordance with his own instructions, Carter's body has been put in a mausoleum, which can only be unlocked from the inside. The estate's attorney hands over Carter's personal journal for Ned to read, in the hope that he may discover the reason for Carter's strange behavior and death.
Disney attributed the $160 million swing from profit to loss in its Studio Entertainment division in the quarter ending March 2012 "primarily" to the performance of John Carter. Given its marketing and production costs, the film was largely considered a box office bomb.
Sequel. Prior to the film's release, the filmmakers reported that John Carter was intended to be the first film of a trilogy. Producers Jim Morris and Lindsey Collins began work on a sequel to be based on Burroughs' second novel, The Gods of Mars; the working title is John Carter: The Gods of Mars.

Producer James Jacks read Harry Knowles' autobiography, which lavishly praised the John Carter of Mars series. Having read the Burroughs' novels as a child, Jacks was moved to convince Paramount Pictures to acquire the film rights; a bidding war with Columbia Pictures followed. After Paramount and Jacks won the rights, Jacks contacted Knowles to become an adviser on the project and hired Mark Protosevich to write the screenplay. Robert Rodriguez signed on in 2004 to direct the film after his friend Knowles showed him the script. Recognizing that Knowles had been an adviser to many other filmmakers, Rodriguez asked him to be credited as a producer.
The film was originally to be named John Carter of Mars, but director Andrew Stanton nixed the “of Mars” portion, feeling it might alienate some (anti-Martian?) viewers and wishing to aim for the broadest possible demographics. Another reason was that he viewed the movie as the first entry in a series of at least three movies, with the first one acting as an origin story about a man becoming John Carter of Mars. The full name was thus to be used in the next installments, which were never made. Should’ve used it the first time around.
Though Burroughs went on to write eleven John Carter books, that didn’t mean he was particularly proud of his creation – at least not at first. In fact, the original John Carter story, published in a pulp magazine in 1912, appeared under a pseudonym, as Burroughs didn’t want to be associated with such a platform. His pseudonym, “Norman Bean,” and was actually the result of a typesetter mistake that corrected the name Burroughs had chosen for his pseudonym – “Normal Bean” – which he had selected since it sounded like “normal human being.” The first story earned the author 400 dollars, which is equivalent to 10,000 dollars today.
Explaining his choice, director Andrew Stanton said the topography of Utah and the red planet were very similar, “so it’s easy to stand in certain areas of the state and think you’re on another world.” Scenes were also shot at Lake Powell, between Utah and Arizona, which served as a stand-in for a Mars river. Science fiction? Science fact! More than 40,000 river valleys are located on the real Mars.
Texan actress Lynn Collins portrayed Martian princess Dejah Thoris, who is initially roped into an arranged marriage with the villainous Sab Than in order to secure a peace treaty between two warring factions of Martian humanoids. For the special occasion – which Dejah ended up escaping from – Collins wore a wedding dress, cuffs and a crown that contained some 120,000 Swarovski crystals, all attached by hand. In total, roughly 1,800 costumes were designed for the movie, using upwards of 383 yards of cloth. Impressive work, to be sure, but the time spent sewing on crystals may have been better utilized on marketing the film as what it was – a sci-fi action flick that everyone could enjoy.
The palace was built inside a disused warehouse in Greenford, West London. The huge structure took over four months to build and had to be strong enough to hold the 400 extras invited to attend the Martian wedding celebration. Hope they got their security deposit back…
The movie and television series, in fact, share no less than four actors. Irish actor Ciarán Hind s played Dejah’s father Tardos Mors in John Carter and Julius Caesar himself in Rome. James Purefoy played Carter’s Martian ally Kantos Kan, and Caesar’s friend-turned enemy Marc Antony. Nicholas Woodeson played Noah Dalton, Carter’s attorney and friend, and Caesar’s friend and confidante Posca in rome. Finally, Polly Walker played an evil green Martian and Caesar’s niece Atia. Quite the coup.
In fact, the scenes were filmed across the pond, in England. Standing in for Carter’s New York mansion was Ham House, a 400-year-old historical residence in Surrey, England. Quite a ways away from the Hudson, Ham House is situated along the River Thames and serves as an unusually complete example of 17th century architecture. The high-class digs, sadly, were not enough to build this movie into anything above the basement level.
