A series of bland, confusing trailers — "as generic" as the film's title — failed to convey the scope of the Civil War-to-Mars story or build interest around the characters. Though you wouldn't know it from the trailers, the film features a compelling love story, which could have snagged female audiences.
The first clue we're given as to why John Carter can jump the way he does comes from scientist/warrior princess Dejah Thoris. She attributes his jumping ability to his higher bone density. Additionally, we can assume that the lower gravity of Mars also plays a role.Feb 15, 2013

It was Stanton's first attempt at a live-action blockbuster, but his considerable success as a director convinced Disney execs to give him a shot. Sadly, their confidence in him was not reflected in the marketing. Ultimately, because marketing for John Carter was so ineffective, a sequel was next to impossible.Mar 11, 2022

John Carter was born on Earth, then later transported to Mars. Martian gravity is 38% of Earth's gravity, or roughly 1/3 of Earth's. Which would make him roughly three times stronger than a normal inhabitant of Barsoom.Feb 16, 2020
The easy answer is that human muscles and skeletons are designed to manage a set amount of weight, not mass. That means that (on average) a human on mars can lift 3 times more mass than he or she could on Earth.Dec 22, 2017
The acceleration due to gravity on Mars is only 3 m/s/s, compared to the 9.8 m/s/s we're used to on Earth. In other words, things weigh roughly one-third on Mars than they do on Earth. This would definitely allow John Carter to leap several feet in the air and maybe even jump over people and Martians.Sep 12, 2013

On 'John Carter', Stanton was crafting a complicated, inter-planetary story with live action period elements and more than 2,000 visual-effects shots delivered by four companies. The director said he coaxed Disney to adopt some of Pixar's iterative style ...
Stanton noted he was effectively being "loaned" to Walt Disney Pictures because Pixar is an all-ages brand and John Carter, in his words, was "not going to be an all-ages film". By 2008 they completed the first draft for Part One of a John Carter film trilogy; the first film is based only on the first novel.
John Carter was released in the United States on March 9, 2012, marking the centennial of the titular character's first appearance. The film was presented in Disney Digital 3D, RealD 3D, and IMAX 3D formats.
The film was originally to be named John Carter of Mars, but director Andrew Stanton nixed the “of Mars” portion, feeling it might alienate some (anti-Martian?) viewers and wishing to aim for the broadest possible demographics. Another reason was that he viewed the movie as the first entry in a series of at least three movies, with the first one acting as an origin story about a man becoming John Carter of Mars. The full name was thus to be used in the next installments, which were never made. Should’ve used it the first time around.
Though Burroughs went on to write eleven John Carter books, that didn’t mean he was particularly proud of his creation – at least not at first. In fact, the original John Carter story, published in a pulp magazine in 1912, appeared under a pseudonym, as Burroughs didn’t want to be associated with such a platform. His pseudonym, “Norman Bean,” and was actually the result of a typesetter mistake that corrected the name Burroughs had chosen for his pseudonym – “Normal Bean” – which he had selected since it sounded like “normal human being.” The first story earned the author 400 dollars, which is equivalent to 10,000 dollars today.
Texan actress Lynn Collins portrayed Martian princess Dejah Thoris, who is initially roped into an arranged marriage with the villainous Sab Than in order to secure a peace treaty between two warring factions of Martian humanoids. For the special occasion – which Dejah ended up escaping from – Collins wore a wedding dress, cuffs and a crown that contained some 120,000 Swarovski crystals, all attached by hand. In total, roughly 1,800 costumes were designed for the movie, using upwards of 383 yards of cloth. Impressive work, to be sure, but the time spent sewing on crystals may have been better utilized on marketing the film as what it was – a sci-fi action flick that everyone could enjoy.
The movie and television series, in fact, share no less than four actors. Irish actor Ciarán Hind s played Dejah’s father Tardos Mors in John Carter and Julius Caesar himself in Rome. James Purefoy played Carter’s Martian ally Kantos Kan, and Caesar’s friend-turned enemy Marc Antony. Nicholas Woodeson played Noah Dalton, Carter’s attorney and friend, and Caesar’s friend and confidante Posca in rome. Finally, Polly Walker played an evil green Martian and Caesar’s niece Atia. Quite the coup.
