The SenateThe Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. Trump's impeachment came after a formal House inquiry alleged that he had solicited foreign interference in the 2020 U.S. presidential election to help his re-election bid, and then obstructed the inquiry itself by telling his administration officials to ignore subpoenas for documents and testimony.
There have been a few cases in which officials have been impeached and subsequently convicted for crimes committed prior to taking office. There have also been cases where a former official was tried after leaving office.
