Depending on the state, an elected prosecutor may go by titles like “District Attorney,” “State Attorney,” “Prosecuting Attorney” or “County Attorney.” They are elected to 4-year terms by the voters in the county or local district that they serve.

1. GOP, Dems like the results

The Republicans can boast of gaining a Legislature seat and winning an open seat, while their incumbents won. They won two contested races for town supervisor — Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann, and Orangetown attorney Teresa Kenny becoming the county's first female supervisor.

2. District attorney

Retired Judge Thomas Walsh romped to victory as the county's first new district attorney in more than a decade. Walsh ran on the Democratic, Republican and Conservative party lines, as well as getting major support from Ramapo's Hasidic Jewish community. He won by a more than 2-1 margin.

3. Rockland County Legislature

Republicans are favored to pick up a Legislature seat with Nancy Low-Hogan's potential loss to James Foley, slicing the Democrats' majority to 9-8 and boosting County Executive Ed Day's agenda. There are still 145 absentee ballots to count, as Foley holds a 66-vote lead.

4. Town supervisors

Orangetown has a new supervisor, as voters elected Republican Teresa Kenny to replace Chris Day, who is bowing out of local politics. She handily beat Democrat Thom Kleiner, who was seeking to return to the position he once held.

5. Early voting

This was the first year that early voting was permitted across the state, and more than 6,800 people voted before Tuesday.

6. Bloc vote

Rockland's 2019 elections — more than ever before — were characterized by campaigns that sought to seize on the split between the ultra-Orthodox and Hasidic community and secular voters who fear their neighborhoods were in jeopardy of falling prey to the illegal overdevelopment that has come to symbolize the town of Ramapo.
