It is unusual for prosecutors to execute a search warrant on a lawyer, although Manhattan federal prosecutors have done so before, most notably in recent years against another former lawyer for Trump, Michael Cohen.
In court papers filed in January, James complained that Trump officials were not sufficiently helping a third-party document search firm that has been hired, under court order, to help gather all subpoenaed documents. "Now, it's late in the game," said Alonso.
Only on Thursday did a Manhattan judge order Trump to comply with a series of New York Attorney General civil subpoenas for the former president's testimony and personal business documents, many of which the AG believes he has kept at his headquarters in Trump Tower.

A search warrant for a lawyer like Giuliani would require sign-off by the highest levels of the Department of Justice, likely by Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco or the acting deputy attorney general who served prior to her confirmation, according to departmental guidelines.
On Wednesday afternoon, an attorney for Giuliani, Robert Costello, said the warrant described an investigation into possible violation of foreign lobbying laws and that it sought communications between Giuliani and people including a former columnist for The Hill, John Solomon. Costello said seven federal agents came to Giuliani's Manhattan ...
Costello said seven federal agents came to Giuliani's Manhattan apartment and additional agents served a warrant on Giuliani's Park Avenue office where they seized devices including a computer belonging to his assistant, Jo Ann Zafonte.

A White House official, however, said the Justice Department did not give them advance notice on the warrants. The White House has previously said it will not have any involvement in ongoing Justice Department investigations.
