Jose Torreolla says he wants to bring truth and fairness to the office if he’s elected. He calls himself a law and order candidate who will focus on making neighborhoods and communities safer by enacting tougher sentences, particularly in the case of violent crimes. He writes on his website that criminal justice reform is “simply appealing language so they can decriminalize everything and by doing so create anarchy in our society.” He has worked as a criminal defense attorney for nearly 30 years. She’s been in the State Attorney’s office for 16 years, working her way up to second in command and overseeing 180 prosecutors and the day-to-day operations. Barra is against the death penalty but said she would not pull an Ayala, who announced two months into the job she would abandon death penalty prosecutions.

Ayala’s move prompted Williams to resign from her office in 2017 and move with the death penalty cases to the 5th District. While he has aggressively prosecuted violent offenses, Williams favors diversionary programs for low-level crimes and first-time offenders.
She’s never been a prosecutor, having been an assistant public defender in Orange County from 1999-2001. Worrell returned to the 9th Circuit in 2018 to head the Conviction Integrity Unit Ayala started.
She was an outsider and did not build the relationships needed to implement her policies. That said, Ayala brought diversity to the office and started some worthy reforms. All the candidates have the acumen to do the job, but one is best positioned to continue the positive steps without the political rancor.
As the prosecutor for Orange and Osceola counties, she is one of our region's chief law enforcement officers, deciding which cases are prosecuted in court, and even how those decisions are made .
Death Penalty #N#My personal position is that the death penalty is appropriate in some rare circumstances when called for by the law. The law in Florida, reaffirmed by the Florida Supreme Court in its decision in Ayala v. Scott, is that an elected State Attorney must at least consider seeking the death penalty in those circumstances and cases where it might be appropriate for First Degree Murder. I plan to seek the death penalty in accordance with our laws and in those rare circumstances where multiple aggravating factors are present and can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. This means only that a jury comprised of a fair cross-section of our community will be permitted to recommend this penalty to an elected, circuit court judge if there is a conviction for murder. However, I am exceptionally cognizant of Florida's capacity for getting these decisions wrong and for the disparate use of this punishment on Black and brown members of our community. I will use that awareness to ensure we do not make the same mistakes going forward regardless of public sentiment.
Worrell also is a former assistant state attorney under Ayala; she served as director of the conviction integrity unit there for more than a year, until she left that post last July. She also is a former public defender, defense attorney and law professor.

Barra ended the month with about $97,000 in the bank, thanks in part to a $50,000 loan she made to her campaign last summer. Perry raised just $3,200 in March, after raising only $3,000 and lending his campaign $5,000 in February.
Justice & Public Safety PAC is a Soros-funded committee. In 2016, Ayala was a long shot candidate who upset the incumbent State Attorney Jeff Ashton, who went on to become a judge in the circuit. Ashton had high name recognition and broad support in the legal community, and his campaign was on the way to outspending hers by more than a 2-1 margin.
