Hap sometimes allows his sense of compassion and respect for life to override his judgment, such as often allowing attackers who mean to kill him to live. Often lovesick, most of his relationships haven't worked out. He is currently with his on-again-off-again girlfriend Brett Sawyer. Some of his past has been taken from Mr. Lansdale's own past. The stories are told from Hap's narrative point of view. Not as quick to anger as Leonard, he often finds himself attempting to talk Leonard out of committing serious violence.

Production

Filming of the show took place in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, although the series is set in 1980s in the fictional town of LaBorde in East Texas. Two of the locations used were the old Woman's Hospital and the Celtic Media Centre.

Episodes

The first season is inspired by Savage Season. The second episode "The Bottoms" was released online on March 2, 2016, a week before its scheduled airing.

Tie-in

A collection called Hap and Leonard made up of previously published short stories ( Hyenas, Veil’s Visit, Dead Aim) by Joe Lansdale as well as new content was published by Tachyon Publications in March 2016 as a tie-in to the TV series.

The Brawl

One of the most intense sequences of the season was just before the finale, when Hap and Leonard take on Truman and his boys in Maude’s diner, and seem to prevail … only for a crowd to gather and (off-screen) beat the two men from LaBourde within an inch of their lives.

Hap and Leonard Patch Things Up

A big question for fans of the show early in the season was what was up with Hap and Leonard being so distant with one another? Leonard is having flashbacks and talking to his Vietnam self, and Hap and making his own bullets, but until the alley scene, we aren’t sure why.

Florida and the Flood

Even though there was a lot of foreshadowing about the coming flood (especially with that devil frog hopping around), the timing of it may have been a surprise. In the book, the flood does show up right at the end and essentially wipes out all of Grovetown.
