The White House press corps is the group of journalists, correspondents, and members of the media usually assigned to the White House in Washington, D.C., to cover the president of the United States, White House events, and news briefings. Comedians lampoon Bush at White House Correspondents' Dinner. See also: Stephen Colbert at the 2006 White House Correspondents' Dinner. Colbert performed while being in character of his television satire of a right-wing cable television pundit. Colbert also screened a video featuring Helen Thomas.
The Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein presented awards and spoke about the importance of the First Amendment.
Among the more notable issues handled by the WHCA are the credentialing process, access to the president and physical conditions in the White House press briefing rooms.
On April 14, 2021, WHCA executive director Steven Thomma announced that improvements in the pandemic situation had not been sufficient to allow the association to proceed with a large indoor event, and that no dinner would be held in 2021. However, the association still intended to select recipients for its annual journalism awards and student scholarships, and announced that it planned to go ahead with the dinner the following year, on April 30, 2022.
During the annual dinner, we honor distinguished print and broadcast with the Merriman Smith Award, Aldo Beckman Award, and a new visual journalism award.
Each year we recognize outstanding students and young journalists representing the future of our profession and who illustrate the importance of fighting for First Amendment freedoms.

The White House Correspondents’ Association exists to promote excellence in journalism as well as journalism education, and to ensure robust news coverage of the president and the presidency.
The WHCA Board, drawn from across the news media, advocates for all of our members so that they have what they need to be able to convey an accurate impression of what is happening at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Whether they tell stories through television images, photographs, sound on the radio, or text, the WHCA works with their interests – and those of their viewers, readers and listeners – at heart.
Most of these reporters belong to the White House Correspondents’ Association. For more than 100 years, the association has helped to create transparency at the highest levels of American government by encouraging its journalists to thoroughly report on the president and vice president.
The pool is made up of 13 to 20 journalists who cover events and file reports for use by the rest of the journalists, Thomma said.
The press corps regularly covering the White House created the association in 1914 to stop President Woodrow Wilson from terminating his news briefings, according to the association’s website. (Wilson had threatened to end them because some newspapers published comments he considered private.)
Reporting on the White House is one way members of the press exercise that freedom. It is important that the association — and its 400 members gathering news for television, print, radio and the internet — works independently of the White House.
Louis Lautier succeeded McAlpin as the National Negro Publishers Association’s Washington correspondent and became the White House Correspondents’ Association’s first Black member in 1951, according to the association’s research.
Steven Thomma, the association’s executive director and a past president, says the geographic diversity of journalists who take part in daily briefings at the White House represents “a great example of the power of the freedom of the press [in] America.”.
The association started out all male and all white. The first female member was likely Cora Rigby of the Christian Science Monitor, who joined in the 1920s, according to research the association is compiling on its history. President Harry S. Truman speaks to reporters in the Oval Office in August 1945.
Rucker, the then White House bureau chief for the Washington Post, stood out among many worthy competitors for the Beckman award. Under Rucker ’s leadership, the Post’s team consistently turned out exemplary work in the most competitive beat in journalism.

The White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) is an organization of journalists who cover the White House and the president of the United States. The WHCA was founded on February 25, 1914, by journalists in response to an unfounded rumor that a United States congressional committee would select which journalists could attend press conferences of President Woodrow Wilson.

The WHCA is responsible for assigned seating in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room in the White House.
The WHCA's annual dinner, begun in 1921, has become a Washington, D.C., tradition, and is traditionally attended by the president and vice president. Fifteen presidents have attended at least one WHCA dinner, beginning with Calvin Coolidge in 1924. The dinner is traditionally held on the evening of the last Saturday in April at the Washington Hilton.
