Merritt is set to launch his campaign at a 9 a.m. news conference outside the Texas Capitol in Austin, with an emphasis on the voting rights battle that prompted state House Democrats to flee the state Monday.
Merritt joins Joe Jaworski, a Galveston lawyer and former mayor of the city, in the Democratic primary against Paxton. The incumbent has his own competitive primary, featuring challenges from Land Commissioner George P. Bush and Eva Guzman, a former justice on the Texas Supreme Court.
Among the Texans he has advocated for are Botham Jean, the Dallas man shot dead by an off-duty cop in his apartment in 2018. Merritt's campaign announcement will come on the heels of the House Democrats leaving Texas for Washington, D.C., in a bid to deny the quorum for the House to vote on Republicans' priority elections bill.

The 38-year-old Bruck, who spent five years as the Justice Department before becoming First Assistant Attorney General in 2018, is also a possible candidate to keep the post in Murphy’s second term. Alyana Alfaro Post, a spokesperson for the governor, indicated that Murphy will not nominate a replacement until after the election.
Platkin joined Murphy’s staff as chief counsel to the Governor in 2018 after playing a key policy role on the 2017 gubernatorial campaign. He is a partner at Lowenstein Sandler. Semper is currently the chief of the Organized Crime and Gangs section in the U.S. Attorney’s office.
Alyana Alfaro Post, a spokesperson for the governor, indicated that Murphy will not nominate a replacement until after the election. “The Governor will name an interim Attorney General this week to fill the remainder of the four-year term,” she said.

Brown was the runner-up for a seat on the New Jersey Supreme Court in 2020. Castner, a partner at Connell Foley, served as senior advisor to Murphy on gun issues. He was the Executive Director of the Assembly Majority Office before joining Corzine’s staff and later worked as senior vice president at Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield.
The attorney general's duties are wide in breadth, and include defending the laws and the constitution of Texas, regulating campaign finance, representing the state in litigation, and approving public bond issues. The attorney general also serves as legal counsel to all boards and agencies of state government. Furthermore, the attorney general is charged with issuing all legal opinions upon request from the governor or heads of state agencies. Finally, the attorney general defends challenges to state law and suits against agencies and or state employees. The attorney general serves a four-year term with no limit on the number of terms served. The salary of this position is estimated at $150,000.
