The state attorney general is the highest law enforcement officer in state government and often has the power to review complaints about unethical and illegal conduct on the part of district attorneys.

On January 1, 1914 , the Bronx became a separate county with its own district attorney. Until 1822, the district attorney was appointed by the Council of Appointment, and held the office "during the Council's pleasure", meaning that there was no defined term of office.

District attorneys are legally permitted to delegate the prosecution of petty crimes or offenses. Prosecutors do not normally handle New York City Criminal Court summons court cases, and the Manhattan DA has a memorandum of understanding with the NYPD allowing the NYPD's Legal Bureau to selectively prosecute them.
The District Attorney (or "D.A.") is the prosecuting attorney representing the state within their respective district. New York State has a D.A. for each of its 62 counties. A criminal case begins when the D.A. has either filed charges on their own or a grand jury has made the decision to indict a given suspect.

Bragg is from the Upper Manhattan neighborhood of Harlem , where he grew up on Striver's Row. He graduated from the Trinity School, before he attended Harvard College. He graduated from Harvard cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in government in 1995, and earned his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School.
