In 2018, Vanderburgh County law enforcement agencies were honored to be recognized by WeTip , the nation’s only anonymous crime reporting hotline, with high accolades. Vanderburgh County Prosecutor Nick Hermann was honored to be named WeTip’s Prosecutor of the Year for 2018. Since bringing the program to Vanderburgh County in 2013, the citizens of Vanderburgh County have amassed close to 5,000 crime fighting tips.
The mission of the Vanderburgh County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney is promote the equitable and prompt pursuit of justice; to ensure a safer community; to champion honesty and integrity of all employees of this office; and to continue to seek improvements and effective coordination in the criminal justice system. The Criminal Trial Division represents the people of Vanderburgh County and the State of Indiana in court and ensures that Indiana laws are upheld in all criminal prosecutions. The prosecutor’s office also conducts juvenile adjudications and prosecutes infractions of state law.
The Investigation Division works both independently and with other law enforcement agencies to gather supplementary information and evidence in criminal investigations. This unit is comprised of five investigators who have full police powers.
Despite having a limited staff and almost 12,000 open child support cases in Vanderburgh County, the Child Support Division has been successful in enforcing and collecting child support. This office is prohibited under state and federal regulations from becoming involved in custody and visitation issues. You must contact a private attorney for those issues.
The goals of the Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office are to put violent criminals behind bars, rehabilitate those who have fallen through the cracks, and instill a sense of justice for victims who were thrust into the system.
In 2016, Hermann brought together health professionals from across Indiana to host the “Vanderburgh County Drug Symposium” focusing on drug rehabilitation programs, trends in drug trades, and personal testimonials from those in the grips of addiction.
Hermann and his staff of deputy prosecutors work in conjunction with judges from the Vanderburgh County Drug Court, Mental Health Court, Veteran’s Treatment Court, and Pre-Trial Diversion for low level felony and misdemeanor offenders.
