Senate Republicans have signaled they would support outgoing Alabama Sen. Doug Jones, a Democrat who worked as U.S. attorney in Birmingham during the Clinton administration. Another leading candidate is former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates.
The next attorney general could be faced with pressure on whether to name a special prosecutor in the case. Defenders of Garland say he would be a particularly strong choice to lead the Justice Department in the post-Trump era because he is seen as above reproach of partisan politics.

Then again, West could be a sensitive choice in an administration anxious about the distance between the White House and the DOJ because he's the brother-in-law of Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.
Before she became known for how she left Justice, Yates had been a career prosecutor, meaning she worked in top jobs under Democrats and Republicans, for 27 years. She brought to justice corrupt public officials in her native state of Georgia as well as Olympic Park bomber Eric Rudolph.

Jones is widely viewed as the easiest pick to get through a GOP-controlled Senate. Asked about Jones , Cornyn added that the outgoing senator had "friends on both sides" of the aisle. "I think people would be open to that," he said. "He's a very pleasant guy.".
Yates has been floated as being on Biden's shortlist to lead the DOJ, but Republicans are warning she would be a tough, if not impossible, confirmation fight. "I think there's plenty of people that he wouldn't have to take a chance on her," said Sen. Chuck Grassley.
