The attorney general has the responsibility of protecting the public's interests in an open and honest marketplace. The Consumer Protection Division enforces Missouri's Consumer Protection Act and antitrust laws, and has the responsibility of representing the commissioner of securities of the secretary of state's office. Missouri's consumer protection statutes prohibit deception, fraud, unfair practices and misrepresentation or concealment of material facts in the sale or advertisement of goods or services. These laws authorize the attorney general to take action against such fraud and ensure that consumers' rights are protected.
The Financial Services Division protects Missourians by recouping money owed to the state or state agencies, including providing collection services to several divisions of the attorney general's office and more than 40 other state agencies.
The Governmental Affairs Division "protects the safety and well-being of Missourians by ensuring that regulated professionals adhere to state laws and disciplinary rules, by enforcing state ethics and campaign finance laws, and by removing caregivers who abuse or neglect vulnerable citizens". It also charged with helping mentally ill and physically challenged Missourians obtain guardians to help get care. Division attorneys also help Missourians seek redress for claims of discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, gender, disability, age and familial status.
Schmitt has defended the state's position against burdensome local regulations on Missouri's livestock producers , fought disruptive California regulations against Missouri's farmers, and as a state senator, took on the EPA for regulating smoke from backyard barbecues in an effort Schmitt dubbed the "pork steak rebellion." Schmitt has joined other U.S. state attorneys general to investigate the meat packing industry during COVID-19 as it relates to anti-trust concerns.
The Safer Streets Initiative was unveiled in 2019 by Schmitt to help get violent criminals off the street faster. The initiative is designed to address violent crime in St. Louis, Kansas City and Springfield , which have been ranked in the Top 15 for per capita violent crime rates. Schmitt says this is the first partnership in the country between the Missouri Attorney General's Office, U.S. Attorney's Office and various local law enforcement units to address violent crime. The initiative has resulted in more than 350 charges filed.
Eight victims, including two children, were rescued. Schmitt launched the Hope Initiative in the fall of 2020 targeting illicit businesses. The Hope Initiative is a three-phase plan to combat human trafficking. The first phase is targeted at landlords informing them of their tenants' illegal activity.
