It is important to note that the Deputy Prime Minister stands in for the Prime Minister when the Prime Minister is out of the country or off sick, but they don't replace the Prime Minister following death or resignation. In that case, it would be up to the Queen to appoint a new Prime Minister that can command the confidence of the House of Commons. Quite often, the Deputy Prime Minister is someone from a different faction of the governing party (or even a different party altogether in the case of a coalition government) and is given the title as a way to keep that faction (or party) happy, so they wouldn't be likely to be able to command the confidence of the House themselves.
If no Deputy Prime Minister has been appointed, then it would be one of: The Foreign Secretary, The Chancellor & The Home Secretary. These are the “Great Offices of State”.
If Boris Johnson were to actually die, then the Queen would consult with the senior cabinet ministers and appoint a new Prime Minister based on their advice (usually
Some Prime Ministers designate a Deputy Prime Minister, either as an extra title to go along with being Secretary of State of a department or as a title on its own (perhaps along with First Secretary of State, which is a title with no responsibilities). Other Prime Ministers don't have anyone with that title but there will be a member of the Cabinet that is understood to be the deputy. In other cases, there is no real deputy and different cabinet ministers will deputise as needed.
The Prime Minister is not directly elected, but is chosen by the monarch. However, the monarch’s choice is constrained in that the PM must have the confidence of the House of Commons. This usually means the Queen chooses from a shortlist of one: the leader of the majority party in the Commons.
It would be a very unusual situation — unheard of in recent history. Strictly, the last PM to die in office was Palmerston in 1865. At that time, party organisation was relatively loose, neither main party had a formally chosen leader, and both took the view that anyone invited by the Queen to be Prime Mi
The Queen is the Head of State. The Prime Minister is Head of Government. The position of Head of State is the highest position in any country. Therefore the Queen is the Leader of the United Kingdom (which includes England).
Dominic Raab is the current Deputy Prime Minister - a job he holds alongside being Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor.
Only a few people have actually been formally appointed deputy prime minister.
