Jul 06, 2021 · TOPEKA — State Sen. Kellie Warren entered the campaign for Kansas attorney general Tuesday by denouncing liberal Democrats and taking a swipe at Republican primary rival Kris Kobach. Kobach hit back by announcing an endorsement he secured from former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft, a Republican who also represented Missouri in the U.S. Senate.

The Kansas Supreme Court ruled in 2019 that the Kansas Constitution protects the right to an abortion. Voters will decide in the August 2022 primary, when Kobach seeks his party's nomination for attorney general, whether to reverse that ruling.
Kobach raised the profile of the secretary of state's office by bringing it to the forefront of voter security fights. That office typically flew under the radar.
Kobach has also been a close ally of former President Donald Trump, winning Trump's 11th-hour endorsement in the GOP primary for governor. Kobach also led a voter fraud commission created by Trump that Trump dissolved after pushback from states and a lack of evidence of widespread cheating.

Kobach called the office a last line of defense against policies pushed by President Biden and Democratic leaders in Congress. He raised concerns about limiting gun rights, the federal government setting election laws and immigration policy.

He's a staunch supporter of Donald Trump and was an adviser to the former president on immigration and voter fraud.
The Kansas Chamber of Commerce, a powerful lobbying group that often backs Republicans, blasted Kobach’s decision to run. The head of the group said business leaders have concerns that Kobach would be effective as attorney general.

Kobach was a White House fellow and worked as counsel to Ashcroft. “His experience and skill as an attorney are among the best in the nation,” Ashcroft said. “He is a man of integrity who does not run away from the fight.”.
Patrick Schmidt, a Democrat and former U.S. Navy intelligence officer, announced in July his intention to run against U.S. Rep. Jake LaTurner in the Second Congressional District.
U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran will be running for re-election in 2022, though no Democrat has announced to challenge the two-term incumbent.
A more competitive race will be in the Third Congressional District, as Republicans target Kansas' lone Democrat in Congress, U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids. Amanda Adkins, former chair of the Kansas Republican Party, will again run against Davids after losing by 10 points in 2020. It is possible GOP legislators may aim to splice Davids' district in a bid to toughen her re-election prospects.
And while former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is a constant source of intrigue, his sights appear to be set on the White House. Pompeo endorsed Schmidt earlier this month and has formed a political action committee ahead of a likely presidential bid.

Kelly announced her plans to seek a second term in December, although it is expected that holding on to the governor's mansion will an uphill battle. In the past two decades, a Kansas Democrat has never won a statewide election in a year where their party has held the White House.
Kelly's main foe will be Schmidt, who announced in March that he would seek the governor's mansion after three terms in office as attorney general.
