The officeholder is elected statewide in the November general election alongside the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, members of the Senate and members of the House of Representatives.

2022 Maryland gubernatorial election campaign On January 22, 2020, Franchot announced his candidacy for governor of Maryland in the 2022 election, which would be vacated by Larry Hogan (R), who is term-limited, in 2022. His running mate was Monique Anderson-Walker, a member of the Prince George's County council.
Two of Hogan's six children are also politically involved in the state of Maryland. Patrick N. Hogan was formerly a Republican Delegate representing Maryland's District 3A. Hogan's eldest son, Larry Hogan, is the current Governor of Maryland, an office he has held since January 2015 after winning the 2014 election.
The governor holds the office for four years and can choose to run for reelection. The Governor is not eligible to serve more than eight years in any twelve-year period.
