Boystown in Chicago still has to top this list. Boystown has been mentioned as one of the first LGBT neighborhoods in the US, and it's certainly one of the most active. Boystown is located in the Lakeview Neighborhood on the north side of the city.
Boystown gets all the attention for being the largest LGBT community. As the name would suggest, it's mostly known for homosexual men. Andersonville, however, is far more well known for the Lesbian community. Andersonville is located north of Boystown, about two miles away from Wrigley Field.
Evanston is probably best known as a college town. In the northern suburbs of Chicago, Evanston is home to Northwestern University, and many of the restaurants and bars cater to the students who attend this prestigious college. The city has a diverse population of residents and students, including a large LGBT population.
Rogers Park is the farthest north of the Chicago neighborhoods, which does make it less convenient in terms of travel around the city. Though, even commuting is still very much possible through the trains, buses, and privately owned vehicles. This area of the city is known for being exceptionally diverse, including a large LGBT community.
Pilsen today is probably best known for its Hispanic population. On the West Side of Chicago, Pilsen has been traditionally Latino since about the 1950's or 60's after the Eastern European immigrant population moved westward into the suburbs.
Oak Park is a suburb located just west of Chicago and has been known as a bastion for diversity and the arts for many years. The entire area has a very "city" feel to it, with art galleries, quaint book stores, and tree-lined streets.
If you've heard of Berwyn at all, you either associate it with the town of Cicero or the old television show, Son of Svengooli. Berwyn is a suburb just west of the city, within a 20 minute drive. It's also just south of Oak Park and Forest Park, which also have thriving LGBT communities.
