A District Attorney (D.A.) is the prosecuting officer of a criminal case (i.e., the official who represents the government in the prosecution of criminal offenses). After an arrest, the D.A. will either call a grand jury to help determine whether to file charges or issue their own " information " for charges to be brought. After charges are filed, the defendant is arraigned and date is set for the trial (unless the defendant settles through a guilty plea ).
