(CNN) Markeith Loyd, convicted of the murder of Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton, was sentenced to death Thursday by a Florida judge.
Orange County Clerk of Courts records showed that Loyd filed a motion requesting to defend himself in July and the judge granted it on Aug. 2, WKMG reported. Court records showed that defense attorneys Terence Lenamon and Ted Marrero were ordered to remain on the case as standby counsel.
He is known for allegedly murdering his pregnant girlfriend, Sade Dixon, her unborn baby, and a police officer, Debra Clayton. He has had numerous run-ins with the law. Loyd was convicted in October 2019 of multiple charges in the murder of pregnant ex-girlfriend Sade Dixon. He avoided the death penalty in that case after a jury recommended a life sentence.
On December 16, 2016, Markeith Loyd was wanted for the shooting of his ex-girlfriend who was pregnant at the time of her death.

The police officer attempted to apprehend him when Markeith pulled out his gun and shot her nine times. Markeith then fled the scene as police back up were arriving. He took off on foot. He was later seen inside a Red Honda civic.

On January 17, 2017, Loyd was captured. He was arrested in Debra Clayton's handcuffs. Officers located Loyd at about 7:00 p.m. in an abandoned house at 1157 Lescot Lane near Raleigh Street.
On January 11, 2017, his niece Lakensha Smith-Loyd and ex-girlfriend, Jameis Slaughter were arrested for assisting in his hiding as well as aiding him with money.
On October 23, 2019, Markeith was sentenced to life in prison. A Florida jury unanimously voted not to recommend the death penalty for him. He was convicted of first-degree murder, first-degree murder of an unborn child and attempted first-degree murder, along with two counts of attempted felony murder. [58] [59]

Terence Lenamon is allowed to continue representing his current clients at the state’s expense, including Loyd, but Lenamon can no longer accept appointments on new cases after the Justice Administrative Commission, or JAC, suspended his contract with the state May 14, court records show.
