As the statement reveals, the $2 million will be shared among the parties. Both Tither-Kaplan and Gaal would receive $670,500 and $223,500 minus attorney fees. $894,000 would go to the main plaintiffs, while the rest will be stored into a common fund for the rest of the class action members.
Almost two years after the allegations were made public, Franco's team and actresses and ex-students reached the deal in February 2021. According to the lawsuit, they believe that the actor "sought to create a pipeline of young women who were subjected to his personal and professional sexual exploitation in the name of education."
In January 2018, Los Angeles Times published an article highlighting five women who bravely spoke up about the actor's sexually exploitative behavior. Four of them were Franco's ex-students, and the other was a mentor at the actor's Studio 4 filmmaking school.
As a result, Franco's Studio 4 school was closed shortly before the allegations hit. He founded the school in 2014 after studying at Playhouse West in Los Angeles and officially closed it on October 1, 2017. In addition to the sexual assault allegations, a teacher also accused Franco of underpaying him ($5,000) in The Disaster Artist.
