Derek Schmidt earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Kansas, a master's degree in international politics from the University of Leicester, and a law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center. While in pursuit of his law degree, Schmidt served as an assistant to former U.S. Sen. Nancy Kassebaum and former Sen. Chuck Hagel. After he graduated, he served in a number of public official positions, including as an assistant to the state attorney general and special counsel to the governor. He worked in private practice for the law firm of Scovel, Emert, Heasty & Chubb. Schmidt also served as the director of Independence Industries Incorporated and the Kansas State Historical Society.
Schmidt ran for re-election 2014. He was uncontested in the Republican primary on August 5, 2014, and faced Democrat A.J. Kotich in the general election. The general election took place on November 4, 2014.
