Per the Colorado Term Limits Amendment, Issue 5 (1990), attorneys general, like all statewide constitutional officers, are limited to two consecutive terms in office. Former officeholders may run again after one term out of office. Serving more than one half of a term as an appointed replacement as attorney general counts as a full term.
The attorney general must be at least 25 years old and an attorney in good standing licensed by the Colorado Supreme Court. Additionally, he must be a citizen of the United States and have been a Colorado resident for at least two years prior to election.
If the office of attorney general becomes vacant, the governor appoints a replacement with the consent of the Colorado State Senate. The replacement serves until the next election. If the vacancy occurs while the state senate is out of session, the appointee serves until it can meet.

Weiser was elected Attorney General for the State of Colorado in the 2018 election, defeating Republican George Brauchler on November 6, 2018. Weiser took office in January 2019, becoming the first Democratic Colorado Attorney General in 15 years.
In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed Weiser as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Justice Department's Antitrust Division. He took the post in July 2009, taking a leave of absence from the University of Colorado Law School.
On October 23, 2019, Weiser released the results of an eight month investigation revealing that 43 Catholic clergy were credibly accused of sexually abusing at least 166 children throughout the state of Colorado since 1950.

Weiser’s general-election campaign came under fire in its first weeks when Weiser tweeted a photo of a man tracking his campaign and wrote: “The Republican AG Association is desperate to find attack lines and has so much dark money, they’re paying him to tape me so they can later misrepresent my words.”
Weiser still faces a name-recognition battle in his run against Brauchler, who has been making headlines for years.
