Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley has managed to sideline a key player in the ongoing effort to investigate – and potentially impeach or prosecute – him by appointing the state’s attorney general to succeed Sen. Jeff Sessions in the US Senate.
Alabama code states that in the event of a vacancy for a United States senator, the governor will “forthwith order an election to be held,” so the people of Alabama may choose their next senator .
As the Alabama attorney general, Strange frequently joined lawsuits against the Obama administration, according to the Washington Post. He has fought against transgender bathroom rights and refugee resettlement, and opposes the Affordable Care Act and climate change regulations.

Shortly after getting elected, Strange helped negotiate a settlement from the 2010 BP oil spill.
Bentley is facing potential impeachment and a criminal investigation after a former top police officer accused him of a sensational affair with a political staffer, raising questions of whether Bentley used state resources to carry it out. (Bentley has denied the affair but apologized for making inappropriate comments to a woman after a lurid conversation was caught on audiotape.)
The president endorsed Strange in August, just a few days before the original primary election. "Senator Luther Strange has done a great job representing the people of the Great State of Alabama. He has my complete and total endorsement!"
The Alabama Republican congressman won 20 percent of the vote in the first round of the Republican primary. And earlier this month, he threw his support behind Moore.
