Carl DeMaio. DeMaio was a candidate for Mayor of San Diego in the 2012 election, but lost to former congressman Bob Filner. He was a candidate for California's 52nd congressional district in the 2014 election, but lost to incumbent Scott Peters.
A 2018 study done by Inewsource showed DeMaio's Reform California has more than 25,000 donors, raised over $2 million that year, and had more than one-third of its donors give $100 or less. He later proposed a followup ballot measure to the Gas Tax Repeal campaign.

His campaign website stated, "We can end illegal immigration, which poses not only a significant financial cost on citizens, but creates a significant security risk for all Americans."
The National Republican Congressional Committee added DeMaio to their "On the Radar" list in November 2013. According to the NRCC, candidates that made this list were set to receive "...the tools they need to run successful, winning campaigns against their Democratic opponents."
The Associated Press called the race for Peters late on November 7, 2014, but DeMaio did not concede the race until November 9, 2014, due to the fact that there were still between 10,000 to 15,000 ballots left to be counted.
