Barr appoints prosecutor to examine Russia probe origins. WASHINGTON — Attorney General William Barr has appointed a U.S. attorney to examine the origins of the Russia investigation and determine if intelligence collection involving the Trump campaign was “lawful and appropriate,” a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on ...
Barr appointed John Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut, to conduct the inquiry, the person said. The person could not discuss the matter publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.
Durham’s appointment comes about a month after Barr told members of Congress he believed “spying did occur” on the Trump campaign in 2016. He later said he didn’t mean anything pejorative and was gathering a team to look into the origins of the special counsel’s investigation.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Barr had appointed Durham, the U.S. attorney from Connecticut, to lead that investigation -- to cover “all intelligence collection activities” related to the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election and any misconduct during the early stages of the FBI’s original Russia probe.
Barr specifically was referring to the early January 2017 briefing intelligence officials gave then-president-elect Trump at Trump Tower, and “the leaking of information subsequent to that meeting.” At that meeting, Trump was briefed by intelligence and law enforcement officials on Russian election meddling -- and was also informed by former FBI Director James Comey about the now-infamous anti-Trump dossier which included salacious allegations against him. Details later leaked to the press.
He is expected to focus on the period before Nov. 7, 2016 —including the use of FBI informants as well as alleged improper issuance of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants.
Baker did not recall the moment he first heard about the Steele dossier but remembered the bureau taking it "seriously" and said they were "obligated to deal with it" and determine whether anything about it was true, but insisted they didn't accept it "as gospel.".
A source also told Fox News that Barr is working “collaboratively” on Durham’s investigation with FBI Director Chris Wray, CIA Director Gina Haspel, and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats. Durham is also working with Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz, who is currently reviewing allegations of FISA abuses and the role ...
Attorney General William Barr’s probe into the intelligence and origins of the 2016 Trump-Russia investigation is now a criminal investigation, according to a person familiar with the matter. The so-called investigation of the investigators is led by John Durham, a Connecticut-based federal prosecutor, who so far has conducted some ...
Department officials have said Barr didn’t know that Trump had mentioned his name in a July call with Ukraine’s President, suggesting he work with the attorney general and Rudy Giuliani, the President’s personal attorney, whose activities are near the center of the congressional impeachment inquiry.

US Attorney General William Barr testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee on "The Justice Department's Investigation of Russian Interference with the 2016 Presidential Election" on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, on May 1,2019.
Barr has enlisted John Durham, a widely respected US attorney, to help him review the origins of the Russia probe and look for potential anti-Trump bias and alleged abuses of powerful surveillance tools. These allegations form the core of Trump’s conspiracy theories about the Russia probe. But many of them have already been debunked.

The special counsel investigation and the Republican-led House Intelligence Committee inquiry both determined that the Russia probe was started because of Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos, contradicting Trump’s unverified claims about the origins of the probe. Dueling memos from Democrats and Republicans on the House Intelligence ...
Barr says he’ll “assemble all the existing information” from special counsel Robert Mueller, oversight inquiries on Capitol Hill, and the Justice Department’s internal watchdog. But if he does that, he might find some answers that Trump doesn’t like.
Barr's response to treason question called 'astonishing'. As Attorney General William Barr reconstructs the early stages of the Russia investigation, he might discover that a lot of the answers he wants already exist. In a letter this week to New York Rep. Jerry Nadler, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, ...
