1. Because companies don't respond

You'd think in the Internet age, when sending a sentence needs no paper, stamp, or trip to the postbox, it'd be easier to get responses out of people. But personal responses to job applications just don't happen these days. At best, expect an acknowledgement with "If you haven't heard from us in 30 days..."

2. Because recruiters suck

Sorry. They just do. Recruiters are the least professional, worst trained, most inside-the-box people anywhere in business. No arrangement outside marriage needs a closer personal relationship... yet no industry fails more consistently to provide one.

3. Because I'm a working stiff, not a "thought leader"

I had a high-paying job back in the corporate world, and naturally wanted the same level of income when I went freelance. So I did all the things freelancers do. Proper office, used "We" and "Our" on my website a lot, gave myself important-sounding titles like Strategy Director. Tried to look big.

4. Because interviews are a drag

If I turn up for a job interview, I'm interested in what the work is and how I can get it done. I don't give a toss about "Where I see myself in five years" or "Listing five situations where I showed leadership", and you shouldn't, either.

5. Because normal jobs need normal people

Outside a few creative sectors like advertising and software, few companies want employees outside societal norms. They're just too scary. Welch, Buffett, Gates, Jobs, even Zuckerberg: you wouldn't have hired these people.

6. Because high-paying jobs mean high hassle

Reason 6 is a market reality rather than a human bias. A great many high-paid jobs only pay well because the job involves managing people. The higher your pay grade, the more of your salary represents your employer's investment in your ability to get the most out of other human beings.

7. Because I'm no good at it!

This last isn't self-deprecating. Some people just aren't cut out for employeedom and have never grokked the secret codes and behaviours of being a hireable individual. (It's no coincidence I've never been hired as the result of an interview.)

What to do when you are unhappy at work?

If you’re only unhappy at work because of a fellow employee or your boss, then you might want to look at new positions in similar departments or companies. Be clear about what you want to change. This will stop you from slipping from the unhappy frying pan into the depressing fire.

It can be extremely uncomfortable to practice something that goes against your beliefs, even if they’re not particularly strongly held. If you work in the fast-paced commercial sector, moving to a country farm may be too much of a shock to your system. Be very clear and honest with yourself about what it is that’s making you unhappy at work, and this will lead the way into solving the other problems.

3. Stop Applying to Random Jobs and Start Networking More

5. Consider Part-Time or Temporary Work

If you’re thinking of giving up your job search, consider taking a part-time job or a temporary position while you continue to look for full-time work.

If you quit your job to accept a better job that offers remote work, please let your current employer know why!

That way your employer gets the hint they should offer WFH flexibility.

Your bachelor degree means a lot

Do not let the unending posts about how a Bachelors degree do no service to you. Anyone with this type of thinking clearly has not worked anywhere that has shown how valuable a degree is. If you find yourself in a warehouse, driving, manual labor position, you know how valuable a degree can be.

I am sick and tired of being ghosted by employers after interviews

So an old employee of mine reached out last month on LinkedIn. He had been struggling lookingfor work for about a month and was reaching out in desperation. Knowing his skilset I linked him with a recruiter that I have a relationship that always recruits in my ex employees field.

Company that chose another candidate reoffered me the job

I applied to a job sometime in April and was contacted almost a month later. I did three rounds of interviews and was told I was up against one other person. The company called me a week after the last interview and told me that they were going with the other person.

After 4 months and 189 applications, I accepted an offer yesterday!

The offer that I accepted is in Human Resources (my field). It’s 100% remote, offers full benefits and 25% more salary than my current position, quarterly bonuses, and they are sending a full Mac setup complete with 2 iMac displays and a MacBook Pro. Not to mention they have growth opportunities and an amazing and supportive culture.
