Acosta was a member of the National Labor Relations Board from 2002 to 2003. He then served as assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division under former President George W. Bush from 2003 to 2005. Acosta was the first Latino to serve as an assistant attorney general.

President Donald J. Trump nominated Alexander Acosta to be the 27th United States Secretary of Labor. He was sworn in on April 28, 2017. Secretary Acosta is the son of Cuban refugees, a native of Miami, and first-generation college graduate.
Although Hamilton came to be known as the most important Secretary of the Treasury in U.S. history, he spent only five years in that position.
