0. Comment. Joel and Ethan Coen are known for their totally unique films, but some of their best work are also adaptations. True Grit is their first straight Western film and is an adaptation of the Charles Portis novel which was also famously adapted into a 1969 film starring John Wayne.
In the film's epilogue, an adult Mattie Ross is seen responding to a letter from Rooster asking if she would like to meet when he is passing by as part of a traveling show. When Mattie goes to see her own adventure buddy, she learns he passed away.
Some of the funniest scenes in the film comes from the childish back-and-forth between Rooster and LaBoeuf. These two men cannot seem to help but bicker, and Mattie is often stuck in the middle. In one funny scene, Mattie tries to calm them down by offering to tell the two grown men the story of the "Midnight Caller."
