The galleries of the Senate and the House of Representatives are open to view whenever either body is in session. Gallery passes obtained from the office of your Senator or Representative are always required to visit the galleries. The line for entry to the Senate Gallery is at the North side of the Capitol.
The Senate released its 2020 calendar for February through December at the end of 2019. The Senate met for fewer days in 2019 than 2018, with 168 days scheduled versus 186. From 2001 to 2018, the Senate spent an average of 165 days in session each year, and the House spent an average of 146 days in session.
A Congress lasts for two years, with each year constituting a separate session. The Legislative Reorganization Act of 1970 requires Congress to adjourn sine die no later than July 31 of each year unless there is a declared war, or unless Congress otherwise provides.
