CHICAGO, May 11, 2018 - Newly released survey data from the American Bar Association on the nationwide population of lawyers indicates a total of 1,338,678 licensed, active attorneys in the United States.
New York State has the highest concentration of lawyers compared to any other state, resulting in higher demand for the profession — nearly double the average national demand.
Large and midsize law firms are experiencing significant staffing shortages now, partly a result of firms needing to hire more support when their attorney ranks expanded or went remote. And law firms aren't just competing with the law firm down the street for talent.
According to the American Bar Association there are currently 1,116,967 lawyers practicing in the United States. That is approximately one for every 300 people, or approximately 0.36% of the total population. These statistics relate only to those currently practicing and maintaining their licenses.
Just as it did last year, the District of Columbia has the highest lawyer hourly rate, an average of $380, up 8.4% from 2019, when the average was $348. After D.C., the top jurisdictions are, in order, New York at $357 (+3%), California at $338 (+4.4%), Delaware at $333 (+7.2%) and Nevada at $312 (+1.2%).
How Much Does a Lawyer Make? Lawyers made a median salary of $126,930 in 2020. The best-paid 25 percent made $189,520 that year, while the lowest-paid 25 percent made $84,450.
New York has the highest number of lawyers per capita, with 9.5 attorneys for every 1,000 people, according to the profile. In New York City, there are 14 attorneys for every 1,000 people.

I cannot speak highly enough about Rion, Rion and Rion, LPA, Inc (Kyle Lennen). I was not sure how my criminal case was going to turn out. I felt lost and hopeless. I had another attorney that things went bad quickly.
Kyle was very straight forward and professional. My refusal to blow was justified in my mind because I had no alcohol. Kyle let me know every aspect of the case and how not taking the blow test went against me. Kyle is a young, good guy that is straight to the point.
Kyle was absolutely amazing! He was so supportive with my decision to fight! And had very great details to support my case. I will consult him personally for any future cases because I appreciate his thorough detail!
I found myself in a very scary and confusing situation that required a lawyer. I called Rion, Rion and Rion and they got me in right away. Kyle Lennen was my attorney and he was absolutely fantastic. He not only handled my case aggressively and professionally, but he related to me on a personal level and that made all the difference for me.
Mr. Lennen is an excellent attorney. Hes trustworthy and always there for me when I need him. Sometimes its hard to seek legal representation but I can guarantee choosing Kyle wont be a mistake
