The Federal Communications Commission’s Attorney Honors Program is a two-year employment and training program designed to introduce selected candidates to the field of communications law and policy. Honors Attorneys quickly gain valuable experience and benefit from a wide variety of learning experiences.
Department components (or branches within a component), and USAOs may participate informally in the Honors Program, subject to availability of funds. These components may not follow the regular Honors Program timeline or procedures, and may contact a candidate at any time during or after the formal review and selection process. Applicants may, at their discretion, apply to any number of informally participating components and also may apply only to an informally participating component. The tentative number of hires is listed by the name of each informally participating component. These selections do not count as one of an applicant's formal employment preferences.
The National Security Division (NSD) offers permanent positions in Washington, D.C. Honors Program attorneys hired for permanent positions must agree to a three-year commitment and be able to obtain a Top Secret security clearance.
Applicants must select which of the eight subject areas they wish to be considered for: civil rights; consumer financial protection; conviction review & innocence claims; data privacy & cybersecurity; environment; gun safety & gun violence; public integrity & corruption; and worker rights & labor enforcement. Applicants also have the option of applying for the Solicitor Fellow, which was launched for the 2021 Honors Program. Applicants may select as many or as few issue areas as they like; if they select more than one, they should rank their preferences in the online application. Applicants interested in the Solicitor Fellow may add that to their ranked choices or may choose to apply only for that position.
Judicial clerks who will complete their clerkship by September 2021. Attorneys who do not meet these criteria but are nonetheless interested in working for the Attorney General’s Office are welcome to apply through the regular employment application process. For more information, click here.
The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) Honors Program is a comprehensive two-year law program designed to introduce highly motivated selected candidates to the field of employment and labor law. NLRB Honors Program also allows the selected candidates an opportunity to work directly beside practicing employment/labor lawyers and technical professionals in its Washington, D.C. Headquarters and Regional Offices. The selected candidates will gain valuable experience and benefit from a wide variety of learning experiences. Placement within the Agency will be based on the candidates interests, experience and/or needs of the NLRB.
Field attorneys act on behalf of the General Counsel by investigating charges of unfair labor practices, resolving or litigating cases, conducting elections to determine union representation preferences, and acting as hearing officers in contested representation matters. Attributes of an Ideal Candidate 1 Special high-level recognition for academic excellence in law school, such as selection to Order of the Coif or receipt of the American Jurisprudence Award in related courses; or top grades in tax or related course work (e.g., “A” grades in tax courses); 2 Evidence of background or experience in the position to be filled, such as taking relevant law school classes (e.g., tax law, bankruptcy/debtor creditor law, administrative law) or relevant legal or tax experience (e.g., tax legal experience) or relevant tax volunteer experience (e.g., VITA, Tax Clinic); 3 Work or achievement in the law school’s law review or other recognized law journal; 4 Winning a moot court or mock trial competition or membership on a moot court or mock trial team

Application Process: Applications are usually accepted in mid-to-late fall. Students may apply to any number of three separate programs. All three use the same application process, but the deadlines may vary slightly.
